Polestar To Tackle Model 3 Next Summer With Polestar 2

Polestar, Volvo's electrified vehicle upstart, is ready to take on the Tesla Model 3.

The Polestar 2, introduced Wednesday ahead of its formal debut at the Geneva auto show, will be powered by two electric motors and a 78 kilowatt-hour battery, delivering 275 miles of range. The all-wheel-drive electric powertrain produces 300 kilowatts (408 hp) and can sprint from zero to 62 mph in under 5 seconds.

With a minimalist cockpit dominated by an 11-inch iPad-style screen, the five-door, midsize luxury sedan is more homage than competitor to the Model 3.

The China-built Polestar 2 will arrive in the U.S. in early summer next year, Polestar North America chief Gregor Hembrough told Automotive News recently.

More will be coming in a similar price range without the quality control problems Tesla has been struggling with.

Please explain how a polestar at $68k competes with a $42k Model 3?

The first 12 months of Polestar production will only be the $68k Launch version. Also, a higher performance version of the Polestar will be even more than $68k. Probably closercto $80k.

A fully blown out optioned Model 3 Performance is $68k (only $63k base). and will wipe the floor with a Polestar.

If you're not a Tesla hater, it's easy to see that this attempt by Volvo falls short. Starting with range, price, performance, no superchargers, no autopilot, no OTA updates? If I were comparing these two, the Model 3 would be an easy buy. And a buy from an American car company! Sorry, where's the next Tesla killer?

Is it just me or does it look more like a CUV or crossover than a sedan? They're going to have an uphill battle given the specs, I was hoping for more given all the buildup. At least knock it out of the park with one thing that will make it better than the 3. It doesn't even beat out the Chinese Nio CUVs that have been selling for a year.

The strength of cars from Tesla and a car like the Prius that attracted hordes of buyers was their styling. Their styling, while sometimes bordering on hideous (hi, current Prius) stood out from all the "everyday" cars on the road. And it allowed owners to basically shout to the world, "look, I'm green!!". Much like vegans and Crossfitters do.
This Polestar is really not an impressive design on the outside. The front-end looks handsome, but the rear is awful, as are all new Volvo sedans. And I do agree it looks more like an Audi Allroad type of vehicle.

The Polestar has a more dramatic visage than the vanilla Model 3 and in the U.S. will have a $7500 price advantage and a pedigree automaker (Volvo) , which guarantees a warm reception.First cars will be high end versions, to be followed by $42,000 base models. Hopefully they didn't follow Tesla's disastrous safety blunder with electrically operated door handles, which were the cause of recent deaths of Tesla occupants trapped inside a burning Tesla. The driving range is likely over 300 miles. A true "Tesla Killer" (the car Tesla cultists claimdoesn't exist) has already appeared in the form of the Porsche Taycan, which has already outsold the Model S for its first year's production and forced Tesla to discontinue the base model.

Wow, thanks for those great facts ColMosby. You are so informed. It's great to see the Taycan is doing so well and Porsche embracing the future. It sounds like you purchased the Taycan. Congratulations. How is the ride? How much did it cost? How much range do you get? How's the performance? What features do you like best? How long have you had it? Just curious. Thanks.

Every time I hear Polestar I think of one specific popular girl in high school.
