Aftermarket Responds To Purists With Kit To Replace Supra's BMW Powerplant With A Toyota 2JZ 6 Cylinder
After a very long absence and over a decade of anticipation, the new Toyota Supra finally entered the scene last month at the Detroit Auto Show. Since then, there’s been more than a few people criticize the Supra’s engine. It’s not bad by any stretch – the 335-horsepower turbocharged inline-six fits perfectly with the Supra’s I6 pedigree, including the infamous 2JZ mill that helped the previous-gen model ascent to legendary status. Rather, the criticism stems from the fact that the new engine isn’t a product of Toyota, but BMW. To be blunt, the German partnership for the Supra’s powertrain has Toyota purists furious.

Sure you can replace the engine, but all the interior and the switchgear is still from BMW. Just go out and buy and old MKIV car and tweak/upgrade it to your heart's content. You will be happier in the long run and you will have a real Toyota Supra.

Lets take a $60,000 overpriced vehicle, swap out the engine for say another $25,000 including installation and void the warranty...what a great idea, not! Buy an out of the box better performing fully warrantied Vette or Red Eye for that kind of expense.

Lexus offered the original IS with a inline 6. I am sure the molds/casts are somewhere in Toyoda City.

Toyota has plenty of ability to do its own I-6 or V6.

@MD- That is what makes this situation all the more sad. You can do a 1 off LFA or a very low volume LC500, but you cheap out on the Supra rebirth.

The new coupe should have been a Celica (turbo 4), Supra (V6), Supra GT (V8).

Is this the Japanese pretending to be a German car or the Germans pretending to be a Japanese car?
