Tesla To CLOSE Stores And Move To Online Sales! $35,000 Model 3 In March

Tesla Inc. is largely abandoning its long-controversial retail model of factory-owned stores, it said Thursday, turning instead to an equally radical model for selling cars — online sales only.

The shift in retail strategy occurs as the California electric-vehicle maker grapples to compete in a new world of lower-priced EVs. The moves comes as Tesla announced plans to bring the $35,000 version of the Model 3 electric sedan to market as early as March.

I see this as a major problem for Tesla. While reducing costs enough to sell the Model 3 at $35,000 (well $36,200) is a good thing, any benefit will be erased if sales of the Model 3 plummet due to the very non-traditional sales method. Furthermore, even with the cost reduction due to store closures, will selling the Model 3 at $35,000 be profitable for Tesla? I'm not sure it will.

This is a hugely controversial move by Tesla. If Tesla is wrong, this could mean bankruptcy or another automaker buying Tesla.

Personally, I would like to see how they will handle test drives. I would never buy a car without looking it ovr in person and driving it.

I guess the question is would you buy a car without ever having the chance to sit in it or take it for a test drive? That buying model is not for me but perhaps for some.

At Nearly 6"8" - I am not buying ANY car without having the chance to sit in it-because I do not fit into most cars - often the amount of seat travel is less than others in the classes.

People have asked why I bought my Maybach S650 instead of the S class sedan - and my height allowed me to move the seat back in the Maybach which made me a better fit and STILL allow a passenger behind me with legs too.

OF course - only online sales ALSO means that they will be taking in trades that they will not see as well. I just do not see this being a good idea. Especially when other brands will have dealers all over the place - with HONEST sales people talking about how Tesla does not match up to their product.

I'm wondering if this might be a first step to traditional dealerships? They can collect a franchise fee, and get into all the states that have blocked them.

Genesis Canada has a home/office service. They come to you with the car/test drive/service/delivery.

In order to be able to deliver a 35K car Tesla has determined that it has to cut the dealership out of the equation. This means that any maintenance or quality control issues have to be dealt with at a Tesla center. Are there enough Tesla centers to accommodate all the Tesla drivers. So I see this as a disadvantage compared to purchasing a Hyundai or Kia EV or any of the new EV's coming on the market. All those vehicles are purchased at dealerships. People in theory can drive them to see how they feel. If there are mechanical problems or other issues people can bring them into the dealership to get those issues addressed. I am certain that over time the quality problems for the Model 3 will disappear. However the advantage that mainstream car makers have over Tesla is large scale experience in manufacturing thousands of cars. Tesla is still on a learning curve with this. On the flip side Tesla has always focused Only on EV's. Most car makers are in this juggling mode for future planning. How much future investment for fossil fuel vehicles vs.electric vehicles. This will be a continual problem until fast recharging and range anxiety are no longer an issue for EV's. Once this issue disappears and populations start making the switch it will be an easier decision for mainstream car makers.

My usual post:

Where are the spin doctors telling us how good this is for Tesla and all of the U.S.A.

Don't you know? SanJose and EVisnow and all the other paid Tesla trolls were laid off with all the store front workers as Tesla is running out of capital as musk settles countless lawsuits for calling heroes perps and other stupid faux pas...

When will Tesla finally start selling their vehicles on Amazon? It is inevitable. They will come with 24 hour delivery!

Of course, this is the only "$35000" car that costs at least $38,500 if you want a color other than black and $40,500 if you don't want to have the shortest driving range on the planet - the $2000 gives a driving range equal or less than competitors.
