Third Toyota Sports Car Will Most Likely Slot Between 86 And Supra

Driving enthusiasts hoping for an even smaller sports car to sit below Toyota’s GT86 will have to wait for a ‘dramatic breakthrough in technology’ if it’s to happen, according to Toyota Gazoo Racing chief Tetsuya Tada.

Speaking to evo at the 2019 Geneva motor show, Tada confirmed that while he’s still keen to give Toyota the three-strong “three brothers” sports car lineup first mooted a couple of years ago, current market conditions make it very costly to develop smaller cars – particularly when those cars are niche products like sports cars.

Where in the article does Toyota say anything about a model between the Supra and the GT86? It was one speculative comment by the author.
Is auto spies getting desperate for traffic? I seen the same dozen people posting and it is seems incresinginly likely about half are Elon Musks relatives.

Audi cannot sell the TT. Fiat cannot sell its 124 sports car.

Why is Toyota putting so much money, time and effort into sports cars?

I think they are trying to possibly make the argument that there is not a competitive RWD sports car in the 30K-40K range other than Mustang, Camaro, Challenger. Those cars sell but they are large. Toyota and I assume Subaru perhaps feel that there is a market for a smaller sports car above the 86/BRZ. Obviously a turbo engine which essentially addresses the power deficit of the 86/BRZ. The only other obvious competitor that is closest in size is BMW 2 series. Everything else in a smaller than muscle car size is either FWD or AWD. Further if they were to do this it would have to share a platform with the 86/BRZ. The Z car is old and antiquated so I would not be including it.But again would it not be simply more cost effective to just move the 86/BRZ a little more up market and out of the direct competition of the Mazda MX5 and not offer a lower cost direct replacement of the BRZ/86.So then offer a low to mid 30's sportscar with a 0-60 around 5 seconds. Doing this eliminates the 20K gap between the Supra and perhaps offers a higher profit margin for Toyota and Subaru.

Agree certainly something faster than 86 is needed.

I think Toyota is using this project to try out several ideas. Joint Venture with another MFR, adapting an 3.0L I6 engine than engineering one themselves, honing in-house tuning team with Z4 as a contrast, and use it for possible Lexus Z4 competitor in the future.

A Z4 competitor would also be a Supra competitor - co - developed with BMW - so not likely.

No. Lexus version will be convertible, while Supra will stay as hard top only.

Don't get excited. Toyota isn't that smart.
