Cadillac Says "Hands Off" To Other Divisions Over Twin Turbo Blackwing V8

Cadillac Says

With the 2019 Cadillac CT6-V drawing its power from General Motors’ new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8, it was only a matter of time before people started wondering where else the “Blackwing” motor might crop up. Thus far, the engine has only appeared in the CT6 sedan — producing an impressive 550 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

Future models are likely to include the brand’s Escalade SUV, but the luxury brand wants to put the kibosh on any rumors that the Blackwing will be available under another brand. When asked if the motor would be a cross-brand system by Motor Trend, Cadillac President Steve Carlisle responded with “over my dead body.”

Which tells me it too expensive to build so no other platforms can be justified in using it. GM is all about spreading costs, look at all their CUV's they're all the same, essentially. This is a 'hands off" mill, until there is a reason to share it... which will happen, OR they'll just kill it...

I question that to be true -

I believe a LARGER version of this engine is going into the new Corvette under another name.

I would suggest that Cadillac's exclusivity will be in the Displacement - not the engineering.

While I applaud Caddy getting this very special mill it should be shared throughout the portfolio so that ALL Cadillacs can be special, not just the limited appeal full sized sedan. There are really no other vehicles in GM that would need this engine, they can use the other V8's GM makes.

With all the great decision makers killing vehicles, closing plants, laying off employees, while other OEM's are investing heavliy in the USA... Carlise might have predicted his own fate?

His body will be dead in 3-2-1.

I like the idea they are focusing on building great engines. I'm not excited about the surcharge the dealers will charge for blackwing models.

On one hand, Cadillac needs a bespoke engine, but on the other hand it has done fine with the Chevy V8. Cadillac's biggest issue isn't bespoke engines. The need to stop putting terribly dull crap like the CT6, XT6, and the CT5.

Publicity stunt.

And a sloppily played one at that. Now factor in "The CT6 is dead. OK we'll build a few more, so it isn't dead-dead, but this is the end of the line for the CT6. Oh wait, we're working on the successor." If Sergio Marchionne weren't dead, I'd swear he was moonlighting at Cadillac.

This engine will still not resuscitate Cadillac sales.

Cadillac needs to sharply lower prices, increase size, get some gorgeous styling to market (like the Escala and Elmiraj), and return to names. No one is going to buy into the sh!t show because of the DarkDuckV8.

Blessing in disguise. Remember what Northstar did to Oldsmobile.
