The next-generation BMW M3 and M4 due in 2020 will receive a significantly upgraded six-cylinder engine capable of more than 500bhp in its top form.

The flagship model to use this new engine will be a new M4 Gran Coupé (imagined by Autocar above), the first time the four-door coupé has featured a full-fat M variant. It will be joined once again by two-door coupé and cabriolet variants, beside the M3 saloon.

Power to the people. M3/M4 versus C63/C63S battle great for consumers!

Old school enthusiasts want a more visceral experience but manufacturers keep building more and more power into more cocooning environments.

I hear ya loud and clear. I've settled for more power when I cannot find a vehicle that provides extreme feel good sensations even if just going for groceries. My son's Civic Type R hits the spot...if only it wasn't so boy racer looking.

This won't mean a thing if BMW puts this engine in the same body style. Big Yawn until I see new and improved body style.

I'm not sure I am liking these super high hp turbo motors. These are heavily stressed engines. I never felt my e39 M5 engine was stressed, 5L 400hp seemed about right in many ways.

If staying as pure ICE M3 will approach 600 hp in 2 generations, and hit the limit of FI engine w/ reasonable MPG & durability. I'm guessing some form of elec assistance will be inevitable.

M3 and M4 vehicles sell well loaded for $80K or more.
BMW SHOULD provide big horsepower for such a healthy price.

The M3/M4 may have those stickers, but BMW is flexible on price BIG TIME. Only BMW fanboys pay full price for an M car.
