VIDEO: FIRST Look At The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Leaves Us A Bit SURPRISED — They're Coming Out SWINGING!
It wasn't too long ago that Hyundai was swinging for the fences. It revealed the then all-new Elantra and Sonata with one mission: To take down Honda and Toyota while they were lulled to sleep.

The plan worked and the Korean marque was off to the races. It was nibbling away marketshare from the Japanese manufacturers.

But in the automotive world, your success only lasts as long as your successful product is uncontested. And, the Japanese came back with stellar products across the board. Hyundai, on the other hand, debuted an "all-new" Elantra and Sonata that seemed more like mild refreshes.

It was disappointing, at best.

With the first videos of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata appearing online though, it appears that the company is swinging for the fences again. Just look at the bolder exterior design, rather impressive looking interior and even the digital instrument panel that looks way more high end than a Hyundai.

What say you, Spies?

I think it's good enough to get attention, but while the styling isn't ugly, it is generic despite how daring Hyundai was trying to be. It's definitely worlds better looking than the disgusting Accord and the busy Camry, but does anyone care about sedans anymore?

No offense to Hyundai but your bashing to other manufacturers to make Hyundai look good is getting old. Instead of showing how Hyundai is doing better you choose to badmouth the other manufacturers.
It shows the kind of person you are.

I like this effort. Hyundai sweats the details and it will pay off.

Looks like a Buick to me.

I don't think it's a successful design. It's like it's 80% right, but the details are off. The stupid chrome line thing is pointless. The shape takes no daring risks. It's like looking at an Audi through a fuzz filter so that the image is blurred.

Speaking of Buick why does the 2011 Regald backend look like the 2011 Volvoo S60's backend?

The tail is a Civic done right. The Civic is ugly but the Sonata's tail simply isn't.

Agree this is a better execution than the Civic.

Why don't photographers and videographers understand the concept of the wide shot when photographing cars? Everyone wants to show all these distorted closeups of the car without ever letting you see what the whole car looks like in a decent wide shot. I can' t really tell what it looks like in a real sense.

You mean like how the "agents" do a zillion shots all up close so that you never see the car? People do that because they think that because they own a Nikon that they are photographers, but really they are just Nikon owners.

OK so if quality and reliability is not your goal, may I interest you in the quality/reliability crap storm known as a Giulia?

But you're OK with a Giulia losing all power at speed and shutting down? Got it.

Agree with MD - the tail lights are done better than what Honda attempted. But I think the interior is the real standout of the car. Looks more expensive than it really is ... (and achieving that is typically the Holy Grail benchmark).

This guy's delivery is 1000% better than the whiny mama's boy.

Cadillac should take notes on how to do an interior.

I think Hyundai will have a good seller on its hands in this Sonata. But for how long? Like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai/Kia are the last set of brands as the midsize affordable sedan holdout for America. Ultimately sedans will be cannibalized by SUVs/CUVs within the next 5 years(my prediction). Styling is ok. I like it better than the Accord styling which is trying to be a hatchback but isn't. (The Kia Stinger does it better and offers AWD).
