Too Far Behind? Audi's Answer To The Model 3 Won't Arrive Until 2023

Better late than never? Audi is kicking its electrification plans into high gear with the launch of the E-Tron due to be followed later this year by its more stylish sibling, the E-Tron Sportback. These two fully electric crossovers will be joined by the Tesla Model S-rivaling E-Tron GT in the second half of next year, with a road-going Q4 E-Tron in the pipeline for a late 2020 launch.

By the middle of the next decade, Audi will have a total of 12 pure electric models on sale, with an assortment of crossovers, sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks in the offing. Speaking of sedans, the aforementioned E-Tron GT (pictured here) will be joined by a smaller sedan similar in size with the A4 to go up against the Tesla Model 3. It’s more than just a rumor as the reveal was made in an interview with Autocar by Audi’s design boss, Marc Lichte, so it’s entirely legit.

And Audi will make profits all the way, unlike Tesla.

I bet it will be longer than that, Audi has a reputation for vapor-ware.

R8 e-tron (less than a 100 sold) as close to vapor-ware a production car can be. Audi doesn't even put out the final number.

Original e-tron

e-tron Spyder

Detroit showcar Audi e-tron

2020 e-tron GT

And that's just the electric's

If they can get the Q4 into volume production before or at the same time as Model Y they will be in good shape. The small crossover will be the real volume seller..Tesla will probably see sales drops of the model as a good number of potential customers will wait for the model Y.

the competitor to model3 is a VW not an audi.

A4 is the closest, but it's a cramped car compared to the 3. I used to rent them all the time with Silvercar (still my favorite rental company).

scenicbyway12 - that's really one 1 car that failed. The R8 e-tron. And I would agree with you on that car. It's still not vaporware since they did produce and sell it (albeit very limited numbers sold).
The 2010 e-tron spyder was a concept, the Detroit E-Tron is now on sale in Europe, the GT is releasing next year (can`t even call it vaporware unless it's confirmed to be produced and they fail to produce it).

Audi is smarter then Tesla. It is prioritizing an SUV over a sedan. Going where the volume is.

And the Model Y isn't a crossover. Tesla missed it on that one.

Agreed. It’s a 4 door fastback. No true utility

Redo the Model X by getting rid of the parakeet doors and making it an utterly conventional, upright SUV like the BMW X7 and its sales would improve radically. The crow doors appeal only to Tesla douchebags.

MDarringer - why? I simply stated the truth.
If the remark was that Audi produces a lot of concepts that never make it to production. Then I'd agree with that.

Four years to market is a long time. Perhaps one might reconsider Tesla simply because they are so far ahead of everyone else in the market. It seems incredible that VW is coming out with EV's that could not share a platform with Audi much sooner.

Oh and that Audi e-tron that is supposed to take down the S and X... has 204 miles of range. That is less than ANY Tesla car made in the last 6 years. The $37k Model 3 gets 242 and has a FASTER 0-60 time, WTF. (One of my coworkers got the $37k one last week and loves it).
