SMART In Danger Of Shutdown - Is It Worth Saving?

German newspaper Handelsblatt (via Automotive News Europe) reports that, in a time of belt tightening, Smart’s money-losing ways are weighing heavily on Daimler brass.

According to a company insider, the automaker’s future CEO, Ola Kallenius might pull the plug after replacing the mustachioed Dr. Z in May. Kallenious has “no scruples about killing the brand if necessary,” the source claimed, adding that Dieter Zetsche’s successor has no history with the brand.

Keep it alive and Reposition it as a mainstream EV brand once Daimler has some economy of scale in EV powertrains.

Smart cars are already too expensive. Puttery more expensive batteries in them will not help.

If and/or when batteries get cheaper, the Smart will be a viable option as an urban commuter. M-B will need to make it a bit larger, which wouldn't hurt and offer an electric range of 120 miles/200 km.
IMO there'll be a market for it if the price is right. M-B themselves won't be able to offer a sub $30K EV with their logo on the hood.

I agree the current Smart car is pretty dumb. But if they tweak it there is some potential to compete with the micro/mini cars in Europe.
For this to be a positive for M-B, it isn't going to be marketed at the N.A. market. This would strictly be for European and other international countries where small cars thrive.

The ONLY place the Smart car works is in NYC. They are actually quite popular here. Contractors actually commonly use them because they are very easy to park (the are plenty of free street parking spots where they fit but other cars will not). The gas Smart car was discontinued a few years ago but it filled the "contractor" niche quite well. The all have roof racks on them that have a ladder or something strapped to it.

The same goes for that tiny Scion/Toyota but there are many more Smarts around NYC for some reason.

In NYC, 3 out of 4 Smarts has "contractor" signage painted on it. MB should bring back the gas version.

The NYPD also has a huge Smart electric fleet - I have seen NYPD Smarts drive up the bicycle lanes to get to an emergency.

Why didnt they just start working on larger cars and CUVs when the economy started changing after 2009? Gee that would had been the "Smart" thing to do.

Smart isn't worth saving much less buying the name.
