CAR WARS! Which Sub $40k Sedan Would YOU Rather Have? Kia Stinger Vs. VW Arteon?
Although most buyers seeking an all-new ride drift towards a sports-utility vehicle, that doesn't mean that the world has stopped spinning. In other words, sedans are still for sale.

And if you're looking for something that's priced more aggressive than today's entry-level luxury sedans, we have two vehicles that might be up your alley. Assuming, of course, that you're not a snob that's into the badge more than the product.

That would be the Kia Stinger.

And, that would be the all-new VW Arteon.

Having said that, both are quite a bit of car with panache that can be had with a lot of kit. So, we've got to ask: WHICH would YOU rather drive? The Kia Stinger or the VW Arteon?

If a 268hp 2.0 is the only engine option for the Arteon then I would easily go with the 365hp turbo 6 of the Stinger. The Arteon will worry Audi salesmen trying to sell you an A4 or A5 Sportback

The Farteon is a VW Avalon with $10K overpricing. The Stinger gives excellent RWD performance for the same price. Then you factor in VW's traditional reliability issues and you can see why dealers are NOT excited for this product. The Stinger is the one to have.

Meanwhile, the Atlas is failing in the marketplace to catch on and sell well. Ditto the Tiguan.

As for the cost of the Arteon, I'd get an Audi A4 for the same price and not have the low-rent brand name on the hood.

Not interested in any Korean vehicle. I would select the VW Arteon.

Stinger...for reliability and better style...for a reasonable price... and drives better.

The Stinger looks better, drives better, has more power and Kia reliability.
I've sat in the Arteon and the interior is a plasticky let down.
Stinger hands down.

Stinger less the fake vents on the hood.

The Audi A4 and A5 are based on the VW Group MLB platform for longitudinal layout.
The VW Arteon and Passat are on the MQB platform for transverse drivetrains.

@Jazzyjizz VW has terrible quality as manifested in poor reliability, parts that wear out well before they should, and so on.

It is nothing at all like the A5 sportback. it is good looking, but the interior is a big letdown. And VW quality?!? It trails the japanese brand, kroeans and most US makes.

VW by far... so much better looking in person and interior... no comparison.

Until there is a US Road test I think it would be presumptuous to pick one at this point. The Arteon has the turbo 4 cylinder only. Therefore I would be comparing it to the AWD 4 cylinder Stinger. Comparing AWD in each would be the proper and fair comparison. Therefore I would wait for a proper road test to determine ride, handling, interior quality etc. between the two. Obviously if RWD were the priority there is only one choice. However the Northern part of the country gets snow and ice so AWD would be the default choice for both.

Really? VW has class trailing FWD and class trailing AWD.

It is amazing how well traction control and proper tires handle snow in a modern RWD car.
AWD is oversold for the 2 - 3 days per year you may need it.

Plus, the weight distribution favors the Stinger due to its layout.

If only there were someone on this site who has experience with driving a Stinger and with an appreciation of performance.

Of course more people going to pick the VW. This blog us Anti Korean. When the Mitsubishi new look was unveiled no one said nothing of it looking like Audi. When the Hyundai new look was unveiled about 15 people brought up Audi. Why you think every month car sells of are on here except Hyundai and Kia sells? Answer=Buased Anti-Korean blog. Even when a Chinese car is unveiled on here no one brings up what it copied off of.

I also find it fascinating for an anti-Korean blog no one brings up the quality of Dodge, Smart, Mitsubishi. Its always Hyundai verse Lexus or Hyundai verse sone 80K car

Heck 2 weeks ago the Tellride on this blog went up against the Landcruiser. Yet it isnt the only premium utility vehicle out. Why didn't no one compare a Landcruiser to the Suburu Acent? Because Suburu isnt Korean so they dont want to make Suburu loom bad if they compared them to Landrover or Landcruiser. But will compare a Telluride to the Landcruiser. Why not compare the Telluride to the Ascent? They more in the same class? Because the Telluride is better than the Suburu?

If VW is all that great why the Phaetom get discontinued? Why didnt enough of yall buy it? Why didnt enough of you anti korran people buy Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Saturn and Suzuki and Scion. How tall let the Hyubdai Genesis out due the G8? How tall let Kia out due Scion and Saturn? Now Kia got a plant in America.

Now I see why yall always want to compare a Kia to something out its league like a Kia Stinger vs Ferrari. Because the 2008 Genesis took out the G8. The most bashed luxury car took out the G8. And GM has had experience with luxury cars with Cadillac and Buick. And sports cars like the Corvette and Pontiac. A 1st generation Genesis wiped out a G8. Pitiful.

The G8 has been out of production since 2009. I have not read any comparison between the any Genesis. If you are referencing the 2009 Hyundai Genesis vs the 2009 Pontiac G8 you may be right. However, a ten year old comparison seems irrelevent here.
How about the Genesis G70 vs the BMW 3 Series?

There are LOTS of under $40,000 sedans on the market - However - there is no prestige in buying either of the cars mentioned. Certainly the Kia is an entry level brand that is heavily discounted to sell cars - and VW is well known for its lack of reliability and incredibly expensive repairs. I would not "buy" either - lease only - and short term. The Stinger is not technically a sedan - it is a Hatchback - and with a 5'10" driver - rear seat room is scarce - with me a 6'8" driver - what rear seat? - you mean the package shelf.

ANd that is the problem for me - since MOST cars I drive are at best 3 seaters if my passenger is short - THey may as well all have just two seats and a big trunk. I have to judge most cars based on whether I can actually fit through the door in easily. I would choose NEITHER of these.

Then you're a fool. The data shows that VWs are high maintenance, higher cost of said maintenance, have component failures at alarmingly low miles, have stupendously high prices for parts, have poor reliability, and generally are very expensive to drive for 100K miles.

Kia and Hyundai products have had recent issues with engine fires in their 1.8 and 2.0 engines. But generally they are pretty reliable these days. I don't know the answer for reliability issues between say 2010 and 2019 model years for VW products. I've heard both pro and con. Kia's first effort at a sport sedan in the Kia is excellent with better steering than in a BMW 3 series.(Just read a latest test from Car and Driver on a new 328 XI and it was not good).
