New York City To Impose Congestion Charge On Vehicles In City

New York City is preparing to implement a congestion charge on vehicles driving in certain areas of the metropolis.

 

The New York Times reports that all vehicles which travel in Manhattan below 60th street will be subject to a fee. It remains to be seen how much vehicles will be charged to drive in the heart of Manhattan, but 80 per cent of revenue raised will be funneled towards the city’s subway and bus network while 10 per cent each will be allocated to the Long Island Rail Road and the Metro-North Railroad.

Progressives like to say they are for the common man and then soak those who can least afford it with policies like these. 53% of NYC residents are against it with the greatest % opposing being Blacks and Latinos. Not to mention that all civil servants, politicians, teachers, policemen, fireman, etc will likely be exempt. NYC politicians like to say "We are all in this together" but they are always exempt from the laws they pass. Simply restrict all commercial deliveries to between 10:00pm and 6:00am and traffic would improve significantly.

You mean the NJ resident tax. NJ residents already pay large tolls to cross into Manhattan on the West Side, while the East Side entries are free. Then the revenues from the congestion charge will go to New York mass transit, while NJ Transit will be overwhelmed with more use. In NJ was smart, they would tax NY residents the 2nd they come over, plus hit them harder on the Parkway when the commute to their beach house.
