Falling Short? Audi e-tron SUV To Arrive With Only A 204 Mile Range

Audi announced today that the e-tron, the automaker’s first next-generation electric vehicle, is finally going to arrive in the US in May. At the same time, the electric SUV received its EPA rating: 204 miles.

The e-tron was originally supposed to launch in 2018, but deliveries have been delayed officially due to software issues and unofficially due to rumored battery supply problems.

It finally started to hit some markets in Europe earlier this year and now Audi has confirmed that it’s making its way to the US as soon as next month.

With the Korean EVs coming in at 250+ miles, Audi has come up short. I want something with an honest 250 mile range, because I'm looking at a trip over a mountain pass from my retirement home to my grandkids. That trip is 110 miles, and I want plenty of cushion for the terrain as well as less than ideal weather/temps for an EV. Making the round trip without charging would be my first goal, but I absolutely need enough to go one way and have a reasonable amount still available for puttering around once I get there. Then it can charge overnight before I return home.

Tesla Long Range Model 3 = 325 miles EPA range.

Goodbye Audi.

Loser.

Model 3 is in no way comparable to the E-tron. A compact sedan vs. a crossover. A basic no frills car vs. a luxury brand. No comparison, other than possibly pricing.

I've had two Lexuses before and would take the Model 3 over either in a heartbeat. The ES was more comfortable, but that is where the luxury stopped, the 3 is a far better car in every other way including looks inside and out.

One of the reasons the Model Y looks the way it does.

This will be fine for most people.

The range is an issue....the real world range in Teslas is widely reported to be 85% of the EPA number and 55-60% in cold weather. Assuming the same here that would put the range of this Audi at at 170 mi and 120 miles in cold weather. This is likely not good enough at this price range. Hopefully they can do better with the Taycan/E tron GT as those are some nice looking cars.

It sure does! Between the old looks and a range that is on the low end of pure EV cars, it is a bit disappointing. Maybe they will introduce a longer range vehicle shortly after launch. I would think they have plenty of room for battery capacity in a vehicle this size.

204 is sooooo 2010.

Audi needed to arrive with over 300 NOT to be laughed at. 204 miles is utterly useless long range and an Audi is too expensive for an around-town EV putt-putt.

If Porsche can do 310 on the Taycan I am sure the Etron GT version should be the same if they are using the same battery size and capacity without too much reserve.

They won't do 310 on the EPA tests.

It is a tank. Good thing VW/EA are deploying a fast charging network, they surely will need it.

EVERY car Tesla has made in the past 6 years has had more range than this. What a tremendous disappointment. The crazy thing is that the $37k Model 3 has nearly 40 more miles of range and is faster. Sure, it's not as large, but the eTron is not that big of a SUV either.

EPIC Fail Audi, you can do better than that.
