WHICH High-performance Sport Sedan Would YOU Like To Put In Your Garage?
It's not every day that you run across a rather mint Mercedes-Benz 500E. It's certainly not every day that Rowan Atkinson's 500E is up for sale.

But it is now.

While Mr. Bean is famous for his comedy shtick, he's also well-known in the automotive enthusiast community for being a gearhead. One of the few to have owned and crashed — two times — a McLaren F1, he's gone through that pain and repair two times.

That wasn't his only ride though. He's gone through a variety of vehicles including Bentleys and a Lancia Delta Integrale. The latest to hit the auction block is his twice owned Mercedes 500E. Before the days of AMG this was a tag-team effort between Porsche and Mercedes.

Having said that, I've got to ask: WHICH high-performance sport sedan would YOU want to put in your garage?

For me, it's an E39 BMW M5 in Imola Red with the luxury package and a extended leather Caramel interior that's complemented with Vavona wood trim.

A 1991 Mercedes 500 E is going up for sale in May 2019 at a Classic Car Auctions event. While that isn’t entirely newsworthy, the fact that it’s owned by former CAR columnist makes it interesting to us.

The 500 E is just one of 29 left-hand drive models sold in the UK and comes with a thumping 5.0-litre V8 nestled underneath a not-exactly-showy body. A 0-62mph time of 5.5sec is enough for it to keep up with hyper hatches of today like the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS...

Yes that and the W210 E 55 which was the last AMG to have fun before superchargers, turbos, and air suspension complicated things.

Yah, sorry, but a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec really doesn't cut it these days as "high-performance sports sedan". A BMW 2-series with a 3 liter inline 6 will do 0-60mph in 4.2sec.

THere is no comparison - of a Tiny 2 seat (THe rear seat is a cargo shelf unless you are really really short, I am 6'8") to an e-class that I can actually get into. ANd while some cars today do indeed go exceedingly fast - they often drive like they have solid metal rods instead of springs.

Way Back - I had a 450SEL 6.9 (In the 70's) - and at that time - there was NOTHING that could compete as a sedan with it - it was so far ahead of everything else that even asking that above question made no sense. It was unapologetically big inside, yet no other big sedan could even come close to its performance/handling. I wish I still had it!

Today - I have an S-650 Maybach - which currently has no space in my Garage - but THAT is a real High Performance SEDAN. It will be my last one but I will never regret getting it.

I've had the pleasure of experiencing the 450SEL 6.9 and the AMG Hammer, both of which are formidable even today. But if I were to put one sport sedan in my garage it would be a Hellcat Charger.

It would really depend upon how much performance you would need.If you wanted a "classic" high performance sedan the Mercedes W109 300SEL 6.3 would suite me just fine.(The bankers hot rod). In todays world of high performance and if money were not an object I would probably go for a Bentley with the AWD and W12 turbo engine. So it would be performance with Luxury. If I were a gambling man and I wanted something a bit more unique it would be a Giulia Quadrofoglio with its 505HP turbo V6.

Classic 4 door I would go with a 1960 Impala 4 door sport or possibly an early/mid 60s Lincoln Continental. Maybe not a Super Sedan but they were super. Today I would get the BMW Alpina B6 Grand er... Sedan.
