MIT Study Investigates Collusion Between Autopilot And Drivers Finds Nothing Wrong

Tesla owners using Autopilot are highly engaged when driving with the feature despite fears to the contrary, according to a study recently published by scientists at MIT titled Human Side of Tesla Autopilot: Exploration of Functional Vigilance in Real-World Human-Machine Collaboration.

The data used in the study was generated from the over 1 billion miles driven by Tesla owners since its activation in 2015, about 35% of which were determined to be assisted by Autopilot. Of these, 18,928 disengagements of Autopilot were annotated, which indicated instances when drivers took over during challenging driving situations. Overall, the numbers demonstrate a high rate of driver vigilance.

Tesla has provided a unique opportunity to form a baseline for objective, representative analysis of real-world use of Autopilot, as stated in the study:

What the f**k does the word "collusion" have to do with this?

An agreement between two or more parties to limit an outcome.

Basically cooperation between two parties to guarantee success

It does not apply to this article.

I'm with Truthy. Collusion is utterly incorrect for this application. Collusion: "secret or illegal cooperation or conspiracy, especially in order to cheat or deceive others" or "illegal cooperation or conspiracy, especially between ostensible opponents in a lawsuit".

Autopilot does not involve a secret or illegal cooperation between Tesla and the drivers of their products. Perhaps Elon overstates the brilliance of Autopilot but it's to cheat or deceive. Furthermore, no conspiracy is involved between Tesla and the drivers of its vehicles with respect to Autopilot.

I'm no fan of the garbage from Fremont, but collusion is beyond inflammatory rhetoric.

should read: "Perhaps Elon overstates the brilliance of Autopilot but it's NOT to cheat or deceive."

Boom - you nailed it.

Then what's the point of this fake Autopilot? For that matter, since it's not a true Autopilot, don't drivers per se have to pay attention?

When used under the right conditions such as a long trip or a stop-and-go freeway commute it greatly reduces the stress and strain of driving.
Perhaps you could get a test-drive and find out yourself. :)

I can't believe people still make ignorant comments like this. It show you have no idea what Autopilot is. At this point Teslas will change lanes for you, take freeway interchanges, pass slow cars, etc. You cannot find that tech in any Mercedes, BMW, or Rolls Royce today and you definitely cannot find it in a Civic. Exactly 0 other companies have that level of functionality available today.

Summon has been out for years, letting you park or call the car with no driver in it. Again, 0 other companies have that capability. They just released v2.0 which lets you put a pin on a map and send the car to that location autonomously as long as you are within 150 feet.

They found no collusion between the driver and the autopilot, but Russia did help determine the results of the study and Tesla did try to hide the data.
Are we done with the aaalogies?
