Toyota's Mid-Sized Tacoma And Full-Sized Tundra Will Share The Same Platform

New Toyota Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks are in the works, and when Toyota decides to bring those new haulers out, the platform underpinning them will reportedly be the same. Eventually, that platform will be on Toyota's trucks globally.

According to a report from Automotive News, the new global platform is internally called F1 and will be used on the next U.S.-spec Toyota Tacoma and Tundra.+

So is the new little Toyota Taco pickup big or is the new big Toyota Tundra small?
Inquiring minds want to know.

@skytop - I would assume the new platform is a vertical/horizontal type that can accommodate both body on frame vehicles. I would also assume that the Hilux and the next 4Runner are built off of this same platform. Maybe even the Prado/Lexus GX and Landcruiser/Lexus LX models too.

@CANADIANCOMMENTS Correct, it is scalable and will debut with the 2021 Tundra, which has a tentative launch date of October 2020 and Job 1 of August 3.

The Tacoma might received its last major update, because the current one has an EOP of July 2022.

The next Tacoma has a Q3 2022 Job 1 date, for MY 2023. Design work will wrap in several months, then enter the cubing phase.

Calty, ED2 and Aichi HQ are all participants in the design process, but I do not know which Toyota studios would be finalists.

Tundra design freeze was over a year ago and next Sequoia design also finished as of February, expected for 2022.

So both will have insane chassis flex now?

The Tacoma and the Hilux have a horrible seat height for an SUV. I always felt like driving a lifted Corolla.

This is something I have mentioned the better part of 3-4 years, TNGA-F for BOF vehicles. It is scalable and will be better executed than Nissan's F-Alpha, which was great 15 years ago.

As the Tacoma gets a facelift this October, designers battle it out for the winning design proposal for the next generation model.

Allegedly Calty design did win the 2021 Tundra program back in 2017, meaning ditto for the 2022 Sequoia (just done).

"F1" is just an internal nickname, to avoid keywords such as TNGA-F being traceable.

The LS 400 official code was XF10 or UCF10, but also got the same nickname "F1" from February 1984 to November 1988 during planning and development.

This TNGA-F, is the biggest profit venture for Toyota MC and will last 2 decades at least.

@Carmaker1 - Thanks! What do you know of the next generation Hilux/4Runner? Current models are from 2010 with just minor tweaks since then as you likely well know.
