EPA Administrator Says Obama Knew His Impossible Efficiency Standards Would Kill The Internal Combustion Engine

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler believes a huge surge in electric vehicle purchases was “the only way” for automakers to comply with fuel economy standards set by the Obama administration, according to a recent interview.

Wheeler discussed a number of topics in a new interview with Reuters, including changes to fuel economy standards and climate change.

When asked if the Obama administration was trying to “disfavor fossil fuels and favor EVs,” Wheeler’s answer was clear

The Harvard Law School Grad save the US economy from the worst recession in 70 years with an estute economic team. He saved the US economy and the US auto industry. The current 9 year economic upswing started under Obama. It has continued unabated by his successor (trends have not changed despite a tax cut cut that increased the deficit by 77 percent this year).
What felonies - not your opinions - did he commit? The FBI under the republican appointee was well respected until the current criminla enterprise came to power (22 indictments to date, 7 confessions one conviction with more coming. There is no comparison.
While I disagreed witht eh steep EPA targets, to say it was felonious is emotional.
In three recent studies rating US presidents historical standing - including republicans, democrats and independent historians, Obama typically in the top ten. On tow out of the three studies, the current president is ranked last. In the third study he was next to last.
For an enemy of the economy it sure turned around during his tenure.
Additionally several fact checking websites have rated Donnie as the least honest president ever - by a wide margin.

Well said. Now to the thread. The combustion engine is slowly dying. It is probably a 20 to 25 year death. EV's are the future and all the major auto makers are investing millions into them. I realize many on this forum are unhappy about this and in total denial. It is what it is. We rag on Tesla but they are not dying just yet. The simple reason they are still way out ahead of everyone else. Further unlike Tesla everyone else has to budget for EV's as well as the combustion engine until the big transition happens. To make it happen there needs to be this large mass scale investment into EV infrastructure. That will make the transition a hell of a lot easier.

The question really is which auto manufacturers will survive? By surviving I mean it will be the ones that did not put all their eggs in the EV basket.

The vast majority of consumers have rejected EVs and will continue to do so. A 2nd term for Trump will ensure the Social Engineering mandates of the Obama Administration are erased. There is a backlash brewing against the Social Engineers from Brussels throughout Europe. Brexit, the yellow vests of France is spreading.

The company that doesn’t commit all their available resources to EVs will survive.

runbuh I agree with you 100% about big boys keeping options open. They cannot easily walk away from billions of dollars invested in ICE related bricks and mortar, people and technology but to their credit are pursuing EV's heavily. It is not easy for big companies to overcome the investment, momentum and culture focused on one direction to pivot in a different direction. Its like a big tank ship that requires huge effort and distance just to turn 1 degree. For example, Kodak who invented digital photograph couldn't change, couldn't compete against itself and couldn't capitalize on it.

They are not keeping their options open as much as you think. VW is 2 cycles away from being fully EV, Volvo as well. FCA is using Maserati as their testbed for EV in their next cycle to be ready to turn all brands EV. The cafe and emissions mandates from the Obama EPA and the EU, couple major cities Europe banning ICE engines in the near future. Then add in DieselGate has scared the hell out of the manufacturers. Plus the media is singing the praises of Tesla, overreaction and panic has unfortunately infected the boardrooms at the automakers.

This is very similar to what happened in the 90s when Government mandates from the CARB board in California requiring a percentage of a manufacturers fleet to be Zero emissions vehicles. GM spent 1 billion (1990s dollars) on the Impact only to have the CARB change the mandate.

If you look at EV adoption in the US, it is pretty much the same new product adoption curve as you would see out of a textbook. If companies don't adapt, they're film cameras in the age of smart phones (to piggyback on the earlier comment). ICE cars will become novelty products, works of art, antiques... but no longer practical in 5-10 years.

EVs are less than 2 percent of vehicle sales globally. Mostly sales are driven by government incentives, mandate (China), novelty. Without being able to sell carbon credits they would be losing even more money.
Obviously you do not understand product cycles in the industry. Cars for 5 years from now are already largely designed and about 97 percent ICE. Not to mention the $trillion plus infrastructure to handle the US fleet alone. Cold weather range?
What the hell textbook are you reading? Does it have pictures?

Well all the combustion engine ass wipes who are in complete denial should read what I said. The combustion engine is dying a "slow" death.
I did not say the EV's are the second coming. But sticking all your heads in the sand is not going to "make it go away mommy". Talking about lack of perspective. Ok the reason for the slow death is because unlike Tesla everyone else has lots of money still vested in combustion engine technology. Yet at the same time they all realize that EV's are here to stay. That means lots of R & D in both technologies where Tesla only has to invest in one. Yes you all believe that "The Donald" is going to turn back the clock and allow the old white man racist homophobic to continue fly the confederate flag anther 4 years. I have to concede there is logic to this as I do not think the country is quite ready for an LGBTQ Mayor to be our next president just yet nor OAC and her green deal to be VP. But you must realize that there is going to be a "boomerang" effect. For one the OWMRH population will continue to die off. This will have a "left" effect on both our politics and our cars. So consider this a stay of execution.

As the Chinese Govt is pushing EV's and they "dictate" the largest automotive market, EV's will become more prevalent. That said, other markets might not go there as traditional market forces are in place. Unless govts lie to trick the population like Barry Soetoro and other do as I say not as I do liberals attempt to do, EV’s will remain a niche. Thing is all govts have to do, like in Venezuela, is turn off the power so the people cannot move about. Something to consider…

Once EV’s can be seen as a better alternative perhaps they’ll push out ICE transportation. As electric power is not clean and most tree huggers are pushing wind mills and solar panels, and advocate eliminating the only real source of clean energy, Nuclear Power, there simply isn’t going to be enough power to rival our oil-based economy. Interesting that France derives 90% of its electricity from Nuclear Power and I’ve never heard of any issues there, only the one big deal in Japan Regardless the oil-based economy will continue as practically everything we buy is derived from oil.

So as I said before a slow death. Why a slow death. Very simple. There is still lots and lots and lots of money to be made with combustion engines and there is not the infrastructure in significant volume to support EV's. Further there is no uniformity among auto makers regarding a common standard method of charging. Tesla has their system and fast charging. Everyone else has a different system in place. Could you imagine Mercedes only had gasoline pumps specifically geared toward their models with a specific size gas pump nozzle that only fit Mercedes while BMW had their own size nozzles. This is still an issue with EV's, however. You cannot win over the driving population unless these issue's are resolved. But I think more than not that automakers are not willing to give up on the combustion engine and move over to EV's while there is still money in combustion. This is why I now believe dedicated EV companies like Tesla will continue to exist. Obviously China is the test bed for the rest of the world when it comes to EV's. Therefore 20 to 25 years out is my guess of the time frame for the combustion engine to die off. As I said a slow death.
