Daimler Ready To Sacrifice Renault-Nissan Alliance To Cut Costs

Daimler may end its partnership with the Renault-Nissan Alliance as part of a cost-saving strategy to be introduced by incoming chief executive Ola Kallenius.

Germany’s Manager Magazin asserts that the German company is looking for 6 billion euros ($6.75 billion) in cost savings and efficiency gains by 2021 at the Mercedes-Benz brand. It also wants to save a further 2 billion euros ($2.25 billion) at its Daimler Trucks division.

Benz is making room for Tesla, Aston, and a full revival of Maybach

No. Geely told them they will use Geelys instead of Renaults. And Mercedes said "Yessa Massa".

Lol what they already are more sales, Benz supplies all the switch gear for window controls, trunk releases, and gear selectors for Tesla vehicles and Tesla will also begin building vans on their sprinter platforms to follow up the commercial success of their wait list semi trucks for small and large businesses

Benz plays chess, why play catch-up like every other automaker rushing to the market with an EV, when you can just collaborate with who everyone else is trying to catch up with lol

In the S and X, the 3 has a completely separate supply chain with all original components (probably a bad call since that could have delayed things). I would expect the next S/X refresh will use the components from the 3 instead of MB.

And by then you should also expect their soon to come vans to be based on mercedes platforms anyway

Renault-Nissan is a mess and no use for MB. Might as well turn to someone else, such as... Toyota or Honda?

With Geely having bought in, that won't happen. Most likely Geely, Volvo, and Mercedes crossovers will share a lot.

LOL that’s a good one, Geely has already dragged Volvo’s reliability down to no return, Mercedes will pass until Geely puts out something of quality.

More than likely Geely will pay Benz for its already proven platforms instead of trying to reinvent the wheel itself, kind of like when Melanie and Trump bowed down to Michelle Obama and thanked her for borrrowing/stealing her speech

You honestly believe that Geely would continue to let Mercedes operate autonomously? Geely is coming and their first grab of Mercedes was significant. More will come.

welcome to the global market, where investors and partnerships happen all the time. Benz will do what they do best, buy back whatever amount they dangled in front of Geely when they get bored of the alliance or as soon as Geely doesn't operate how Benz wishes...

watch and learn, the longest running car manufacturer didn't get there by playing a fool

Car4Life1 Get your facts straight. Mercedes did NOT lure Geely. Geely did a grab that blindsided Mercedes. It was a "hostile" act on Geely's part that forced Mercedes to make nice-nice in public.

Geely most decidedly is looking to strengthen its holdings to grow their company and their acquisitions show that very evidently.

Geely's acquisition of a chunk of Mercedes was a hostile action. Mercedes did not welcome it when Geely approached them initially, so Geely just did the buy on their own. Mercedes was like "Oh shit!"

Geely's acquisition and how they did it is well documented. You can choose to remain ignorant.

This time Matt is correct - Mercedes had no interest in having Geely invest in them - and did not even offer a board membership.

Mercedes already had its fling (with Chrysler) that ended badly, even though Chrysler was still near it height. They have little or no interest in producing cheap world cars - their stated strategy is still to produce vehicles people ASPIRE to - not Geely Junk

Thank you @TomM

Arguably though, Volvo AKA "Geely junk" are aspirational vehicles of a lot of people.

While I totally appreciate you trying to prevent mattiboy from having a nervous breakdown, the flaw in the argument is obvious as you stated Benz had no interest in Geely....that’s apparent, now what you are overlooking is the cash flow Benz got from the transaction allowing them to invest in numerous projects/ventures

It’s a strategy move for Benz, as I said before watch and learn.

Chrysler while not a great moment in time, was a crucial time for Benz to learn and gain more access to what would become one of their biggest markets, it also demonstrated Benz’s ability to collaborate on larger scales, and most importantly the do’s and donts of such an acquisition

@Car4life1 The word is "strategic" not "strategy".

The ONLY strategic move here was by Geely which is quite obviously buying its portfolio of car brands on its way to being the #1 world car maker. They have Volvo, Lotus, Proton, and London Electric along with a piece of Mercedes Benz. FCA or GM could easily be in their sights too.

Mercedes is no doubt scrambling because their autonomy is most decidedly not a guaranteed thing anymore

@mattiboy The word is “thriving” not “scrambling”. Your choice of word to describe the #1 selling luxury brand in the world was poor here. Do your research.

Oh and thanks for helping my argument further, mattiboy, wats the difference between the brands you listed above and Mercedes???? CASH FLOW PROFITABILITY MORON.

If you understood anything about the way the global market works you’d understand that not all investments and agreements are created the same.

Volvo, Lotus, Proton, London Electric NEEDED GEELY.

Mercedes does not but now has gained further access to the biggest car market in the world CHINA

Again Do your Homework I’m tired of schooling you bud

Geely is Daimlers biggest shareholder, so forget about Toyota and Co.

(And Mercedes was pretty fed up with the small Diesel engines from Renault they used in the A,B, and C Class.)

Also SMART is now a JV between Geely and Daimler.
