Think You Are Good Enough To Be A Test Driver At Nurburgring? This Might Convince You Otherwise

Think You Are Good Enough To Be A Test Driver At Nurburgring? This Might Convince You Otherwise

Sitting next to Volker Strycek for a lap of the Nordschleife is an education – he’s intimate with every bump, kerb, crest and nuance. If the name’s familiar it’s because as well as heading up Vauxhall/Opel’s performance car and motorsport division he’s an accomplished racer, too. He won the first-ever DTM championship in 1984 in a BMW 635 CSi, was overall winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2003 in a V8 Opel Astra and is also one of the drivers of the N24 Kissling Motorsport Opel Manta.

Although racing is still part of Strycek’s life, it’s his work at the Opel Performance Car (OPC) centre at the Nürburgring that’s his priority, particularly training the next generation of engineers.

If you've ever been to a performance driving school and think that you have ace skills, you're a fool. I'd love to drive the Nurburgring, but to be a test drive that can drive at 12/10ths, I'd be out of my league.

Hardly. Just a statement of fact. You'll be the first to die. You're saying you want to drive the Nurburgring under the influence of alcohol. #moron.

Yea you can tell the difference between a bench racer and some that actually does track events. Someone that does track events doesn’t talk or act like that.

Kind of reminds me of this Viper guy that showed up at one of Daytona events. His car was heavily modified something over 700 HP. He’s going show us Ferrari and Lamborghini owners Dodge power. He got scared $#!+less as the challenge car drivers blew past him going into the bus stop chicane. He did one session and went home and didn’t return for the next two days of track.

There is a big difference between performance driving school instructors (just lost a friend this week that was doing right seat coaching) vs top level racers and test drivers. And there is a major difference between test drivers and top level racers. It really comes down to job description, a top level race driver’s job is to get around the track as quickly, as neat and tidy as possible while persevering the car. A test driver’s job is to beat the $#!+ out of the car until it breaks without crashing it. Ridden with both, either will show you how good you’re not.

Still never forget riding with a friend that is a somewhat well known Test Driver on track, cigarette in one hand, cup of coffee between his legs, cell phone on his lap driving a 3 pedal car and was still faster than most would ever hope to be.

Having common sense is a good thing. Some men have balls bigger than their brains and think alcohol is the key to driving fast at the Nurburgring.

Capable for WHAT?

Unless you are thinking about running a lap at Nurburgring at competitive racing speeds - which you probably will not be able to do - there is probably a speed which you could successfully complete a lap - and even have some fun for yourself doing it.

The problem is people like Car4life1 they think track driving is a video game. Wreck no problem I have 4 lives left, run out of lives no problem restart.

track driving is very serious and very dangerous, there are no restarts, there are widows, fatherless children etc.....
Peter London - RIP my friend.
