Tourist Trap: San Francisco Democrats Want To Charge Up To $10 To Drive Down Lombard Street

Solidly in the "Top 5 Most Touristy Things You Can Do in San Francisco," is taking a drive down the famously steep and twisty Lombard Street. However, due to an infestation of tourists and selfie-obsessed Instagrammers, this privilege might cost you a few bucks pretty soon.

According to CNN, the city's Board of Supervisors unanimously greenlit legislation last Tuesday that'd require anyone wanting to take a vehicle onto the unique tourist attraction not only pay a small fee, but make a reservation ahead of time. The move was apparently made in an effort to curb overcrowding. As it stands, taking a trip down Lombard only costs the fuel you use and up to 10 hours(!) of your time. Talk about a tourist trap.

My other brother and his husband live there--both are doctors--so I go to visit them and the filth of the city is epic. They usually throw their kid in the car and drive down to get away from it.

I’m sure it will get better once President Trump ships all the illegals there.

I'm not a fan of San Francisco, but it does have its pro's. The high-end restaurants and bars now rival New York and there are many entertainment options, something for everyone. It is dirty, there are tons of homeless, and the weather is the worst of any California city.

The trend is to start banning cars from the downtown core of major cities and make them a walkable people friendly space for pedestrians and cyclists. This cuts down on C02, improves public safety and retail shop sales go up. Everybody wins. If charging $10 for a drive down an odd street that likely attracts a disproportionate amount of traffic, so be it. Cities need new streams of revenue.

"Cities need new streams of revenues.".... how about tackling the root causes instead of squeezing citizens and tourists alike, usually the ones who can least afford it.

San Francisco is too big to be a walking town and no one wants to step over the homeless illegals, human waste and needles. What was once one of the most beautiful cities in the world is a vagrants paradise, courtesy of pathetic liberals with zero principles... anything goes... oh, and when they figure out how to tax "anything" they will...

@PUG- The root cause in my view are short sighted politicians who keep talking about tax cuts to get votes and then cutting services to pay for them instead of maintaining or raising taxes because city's current infrastructure is 100 years old and crumbling. You can only kick the can down the road for so long.

Once again CC speaks of things he doesn't know? San Fran citizens owe over $16.400.00 per taxpayer: Its laughable, especially in California and San Fran to say their elected get there by promising tax cuts.. you're out of your mind, its the give aways and hand outs that get votes: https://www.truthinaccounting.org/news/detail/report-san-francisco-is-16400-in-debt-for-every-taxpayer

Kicking the can? What are you talking about? Small, limited Govt is the best vs one that is in every oriface of your life... like in Cally/SF...

@xjug. Not speaking specifically about California. I was referring to locals where things actually rust and wear out due to 4 seasons and salt. Highways, bridges, subways, roads are all in disrepair. Infrastructure across North America needs funding desperately. Taxes, tolls, fees, licenses etc. Kicking the can refers to the common political practice of putting off these important investments off until the next session, next year, the next election.

Years ago the allure of being a civil servant was job security and a reasonable pension. Today all liberal run cities and states are in enormous debt (taking away from infrastructure and education) because of giveaways to civil service unions in terms of salary, pensions and benefits that far exceed average wages in the private sector in return for votes. New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut and California to name a few. All these states are loosing tax paying citizens to the south and south west leaving those behind to carry an ever higher tax burden. Progressives promise everything with no concern for costs. Socialism will only succeed until there is no one left to tax.

@PUG- Ah Socialism. A bit like Fascism and Communism. Words that are thrown around these days but most have no idea what they represent. It was not so long ago that everyone working at a good firm had a DB (defined benefit) pension. And as you stated government employees still have them. Prior to the 1980's the funding of these pensions were not an issue. Why? Because people and corporations all paid their fair share of taxes. As the right went further right and corporations pushed those in power to lower taxes and also chose $100B stock buy backs over employee pensions or paying their fair share of taxes, things started to unravel. What was once normal, is now criticized. What was once unthinkable (paying no taxes) is now a goal for some.

Once again the spewdom rises... no pension were eliminated because they were to costly and when Social Security was established there were like 60 payers to 2 payee, and of course that’s no longer the case. Unlike Canada that benefits from our protection and what 30M citizens, our Govt was designed to be small and uninvolved in our day to day lives, “liberty”. In America our government exist to do the things the free market world where as liberals have inserted the federal government into our lives to an insane and obtrusive manner. In America our government exists to do the things the free market world where as liberals have inserted a federal government into our lives to an insane and obtrusive manner. You’re just plain wrong We’re not text to Little we’re text you much, the government spends too much and it’s too involved and needs to be dramatically and drastically reduced. They spend money on vote buys then don’t have any left to do what they’re supposed to spend it on, it’s never enough. DemoRats, liberals and other fascists ( fascism is government ownership and control of production… Moron, so conservative and especially Trump are certainly not fascist) want to control everything and everyone. They’re pathetic losers Just look at their all star cast Hitlary Clinton Steny Hoyer Patrick Leahy, the Kennedys, Joe gropy Biden, Barry Soetoro, “Millionaire Socialist Bumblin’ Bernie”, Maxine WaWa... they all want to run your lives cent they’re “Do as I say hypocrites”.. did you hear what Hitlary had to say today? Perhaps the most corrupt woman (<-debatable) since Jezebel... No CC you’re wrong...again.

California Dems have missed the boat. They should be charging all people a tax for every breath they exhale. Those humans are destroying the planet. Farts will likewise be taxable.

You guys are missing the boat on this one. The street is a major tourist attraction and millions of people drive down it every year. This is a huge pain for the people that actually live on the street (yes, I know their fault for choosing to live there). This has nothing to do with being green... they want to minimize disruption to people that live there.

THis is no different from New York City - which tries to keep the Subway token low priced by regularly raising the tolls on the Bridges in and out of the city - affecting the people from NJ and CT that work in the city the most. Outsourcing the taxes to people who have no say is simply what is being done. AS a result the cost of a bridge to NYC is now at least $12.50 with easy pass - and $15.00 for cash - and the Verrazano cash toll is now $19.00. (These tolls are only one way).

In this particular case though - with the size of the street - this is more of a way to convince people NOT TO go down the street and reduce cars there - than it is to raise money. THe toll likely will pay for the reservation system cost - this is NOT able to carry high volumes of cars because of the lack of lanes AND the very slow pace of the traffic. WHile the street gets 6000 visitors a day - most will not wait the long hours in line already. GEt rid of the line by taking reservations will clear up the traffic problems in the area somewhat
