BMW Issues Recall For 3-Series, 5-Series, And Z4 For Fire Risk

If you reside in North America and happen to own a 3-Series, 5-Series or Z4, then this recall notification concerns you. According to the data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain units of the aforementioned models are included in a safety campaign that affects 184,505 units.

The defective part is the heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, which may short circuit due to manufacturing irregularities. Moisture can degrade the plastic components, leading to overheating which, in the presence of fuel, could start a fire in the engine compartment even when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is turned off.

Too many models, too few engineers leads to too many problems.

I had a 3-Series sport from 2000-2008. It was a great driver but the worst quality vehicle I have owned. Struts, both front window motors, central dash fan motor were replaced and the ZF transmission stopped going in reverse at one point and needed a $2.5k fix. It was totalled when a Civic rear-ended me at a light that had just turned green. I will stick with Toyota. Boring and reliable is good.

@C4 - Indeed. I got a huge payout on the car, what is was worth used plus all the repairs I did in the previous 2 years. I have had a 4Runner ever since and will never go back.

You replaced a 3 series with a 4Runner?!? Yikes!
I replaced a homicidal Taco Prerunner with an X5 back in 2002, it was a night and day, including reliability.

@vdiv - Don't know what to tell you, it is a Gen4 V6 Sport 4Runner. Very reliable. I had a Corolla right out of school as a first car and it went over 200k without any issues. It was my trade on the BMW. #toyota4life

Well I'm still around so my BMW and Tesla must have been defective or something.

I am astonished that there are still 2006 BMW's on the road.
