BEFORE The Auto Sector Goes FULLY Electric, What's The ONE New Vehicle You Want To Own?
It's all coming to an end, folks. As much as I don't want to write that, it's true.

Between legislation, autonomous vehicles and who knows what else is coming down the 'pike, the message is clear: Owning a new gasoline-fed vehicle is going to come to a halt sometime in the near future — relatively speaking. How soon? Well, no one knows for sure.

As a betting man, I'd guess in the next 15 to 20 years. Obviously, that's not based on science.

Given that I am an automotive enthusiast with oil pumping through my veins, I have always thought about what's next to add to the fleet. And I always have a list of vehicles I'd like to put in my garage one day. With the light at the end of the tunnel, I found myself wondering today: As time's running out, what's the number one new vehicle I want to own before electric vehicles are the only option?

So, Spies, I pose the question to you. What will it be before this whole thing kicks off?

....

That’s the word direct from Marek Reichman, executive VP and chief creative officer at Aston Martin Lagonda. Standing over the new squeaky clean Rapide E at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show – a 600bhp fully electric super saloon – TopGear.com naturally asked about the other powertrain.

“It gets harder and harder to meet emissions, obviously,” he conceded. “But I think we have the capability to keep V12 engines going within the business. We’ve just got to be very aware of the compliance and the emissions rules that will come out in the future.

“Part of the trick of being an engineer is understanding the potential legislation that will come your way..."

Wow. You may be one of the only people I have ever heard say that their dream vehicle is a 612. Curious: Why?

Now the they have determined that the mining of Lithium, Cobalt, and Manganese to make batteries creates MORE CO2 emissions than an ICE car would - You can expect that the ICE manufacturers will use that information to extend the life of Internal Combustion engines well beyond MY expected Lifetime.

Given that there are so many of these super Exotics being developed and produced - and they all are trying to pass each other for top of the hill - you are talking about cars with excess of 1000 horsepower being run of the mill from never existing just a few years ago.

Still - at over 6"8" - most of these cars are at best - nice statues that I will never drive because I cannot even get into most of these cars. I bought my Maybach BECAUSE of the extra length - so I could have a custom Drivers seat set further back for more room for me - yet still use the back seat for Adult Passengers behind me - and it has worked wonderfully. I doubt that they will make long wheelbase versions of these super-exotics though.

So I guess I already have the one I can drive.

Damn, Tom.

You had them set the rails further back? Did you have them do this at the factory or was this post delivery?

I am 6'8-6'9 and I didn't have a problem in the Maybach. Surprised you had to go that far...

@00R Indeed. I know several guys that are so tall that they make me feel short and they fit into conventional cars.

For TomM they probably went to Lowe's and got some brackets and rigged something. better yet, they probably told him they did something--when they did nothing--and because they told him, he believed and paid for the modification.

For the Maybach, you can get some modifications from the factory - but they used a Coachbuilder to make the modification. THey did not just move the rails back - they made them custom longer - as well - so a shorter person will still be able to drive the car.

I decided that this would likely be my last car (I never expected the inheritance at the time) - and I just decided to go for it - I suppose I could have been happy with the "S" class room - but I had the money so why not?

Remember - the change also required a Custom from Carpet as well - ANd I have the old one and the old rails if I decide to sell. So no Matt - I actually got it done. Another bunch of "Fake news" from you.

It's amazing that they were able to get the car to the coachbuilder and to TomM so fast. The placement of the order to its arrival sounds like mere days. If only Tesla knew this Klingon magic trick.

Really Matt - I do not see anything ON any of my posts that indicate the date I ordered the vehicle - and in fact I placed My deposit on it well in advance of the US availability date. At some point you should keep your speculation to yourself - especially when you do not know what you are talking about.

The idea of a low cost EV with the range of an ICE is well beyond today's or the forseeable future's technology. And with EVs only accounting for under 2 percent of global vehicle sales the prices of cobalt , lithium are already rising. EVs will be an expensive toy only for decades.

BEV sales globally are 2.0-2.2% depending on what you count. They grew 79% last year. Driven by China. Chinese consumption will likely drive that figure to grow 70-80% again in 2019. Eventually it will be 5% in the next two years and then 10% etc. Slowly but surely it will have a more significant share of the market. ICE vehicles will be here for a long while yet.

@Agent00R-

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference..

I have always thought it was a cool car, the most sublime of all the Ferraris and a bit more practical than a 2 seater. A turbine smooth torquey v12 is more appealing to me than a high strung V8. I would still want an SUV but as a 2nd car, this would be pretty sweet. Likely in a silver or darker grey with a Bordeaux interior. Below the radar...

A Prius... I kid! I kid!

Actually I'm amused and pleasantly surprised by 00R now considering the inevitability of going all-electric a foregone conclusion. Legacy companies like Toyota are openly fighting it off with "self-charging" hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells, anything but a decent battery and a plug, and yet even they are readying plugin EVs for the Chinese market.
