Automakers Worry That Shortage Of Critical EV Minerals Is Looming On The Horizon

Tesla says it expects to encounter global shortages of the key minerals needed for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries.

Speaking during a recent industry conference on Thursday, Tesla’s global supply manager for battery metals, Sarah Maryssael, told miners, regulators, and lawmakers that the car manufacturer expects a shortage of key EV minerals. Maryssael said that her comments were referring to long-term supply challenges and were industry-specific.

Among the key minerals used in the batteries of electric vehicles are copper, nickel, lithium, and others. Maryssael didn’t specify which materials the car manufacturer is expecting to see shortages of.

This should come as a surprise to no one. Volkswagen and some Chinese manufacturers have been busy securing long term supply contracts.
Batteries are going to get more expensive.

Actually - I have been posting this information for more than 6 months about shortages of rare earth elements that will make the batteries more expensive.
Now - when you add in that the mining of these materials POLLUTES the atmosphere MORE than ICE cars do - AND add in the lack of charging station availability - and the EV become even less desirable as a GREEN option.

Did you post that from your phone while driving your Maybach?

I've quoted that a lot but don't think it will apply here. As soon as there is cost parity for non-Tesla companies, it is game over for the ICE powertrain.

Dear Matt -
Maybe YOU post things from your car while driving - even in your imagined New Jensen!
I - on the other hand - over the years - have made it clear that I do not respond to phone calls or initiate phone calls while I am driving - even though I could because I have hands free phones in my cars. Leave a message and I will get back to you when I am not driving - period.

Sorry - but until they can produce "profitably" - an EV UNDER $20,000 - and many of them in the $25-30,000 range -with over 200 mile range - which currently is NOT possible with Lithium Battery Technology - the average person in the WORLD cannot afford an EV and there will remain strong sales for ICE vehicles. As long as Tesla remains steadfastly producing cars well over $40,000 - they are not selling in half the markets and there will be a limit to high priced sales- especially in developing countries - that will continue to the next generation of Battery technology - which will certainly not happen before I am gone - and Likely will be Decades away.

@TomM You're a disingenuous bastard. You do false civility by using the word "dear" when you don't intend anything of the sort. That makes you a #hypocrite. But I have to hand it to you, you snap on the bait every time like a meth-addicted hooker walking the streets of Vegas.

Moreover, you clearly do not pay attention to what anyone says. I've not said anything about their being a new Jensen headed for production. I have spoken about the vintage Jensens we've flipped, borrowing a page from Jensen International, however.

I think car sharing will address the under $20k market. If it is cheaper to rent a car as needed than own, that will likely be the future. I could see a solid compact EV with 200+ miles of range for $25k in ~5 years.

EVs are perhaps 20-25% of new car sales in Silicon Valley at this point.
