PHEV And Pure EV Consume 2.85 TeraWatt Hours From The Power Grid In 2018

According to the U.S. DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the total energy consumption of light-duty plug-in electric vehicles in the U.S. amounted to some 2.85 TWh last year.

It is enough to fully charge the biggest 100 kWh battery packs more than 28 million times and then drive more than 10 billion miles.

Because the sales of plug-in cars are increasing, also the amount of electricity consumed is increasing by 41% year-over-year in 2018 and close to 98% within two years.

Ok. They consumed 2.85TWh of electricity. In the USA at the same time, 4180.0TWh of electricity was produced.

@colecole - Context is everything. A data point by itself is meaningless without something to compare it to.

@colecole The illogical point that CC is making is that PHEV/EVs do not CURRENTLY (no pun intended) consume enough current to be that big of an issue. Sane people like us know that unless we build powerplants, the cost of electricity will skyrocket. "Green" electricity simply is neither as efficient or as cost effective as traditional powerplants which we will not build because they aren't "green". Thus the socialist world of idiocy is all about making us economic cripples.

@MD- Currently - LOL. But in all seriousness, 0.068% of total electrical use isn't worth being concerned about. I would worry more about people with old refrigerators in their basement or old AC units (5-10 SEER) before I turned my attention to electric cars. In fact 69% of household electric use in the North East is cooling. Throwing money at AC replacement is a much more logical step than supporting BEV purchases.

When socialists are illogical, they double down on their illogic.

Here’s a data point for you the Federal Government brings in approximately 36B a year from gasoline and diesel taxes per year. The states bring in approximately another 70B. Now do you seriously think that the loss of that revenue by the elimination ICE and the switch over to EVs isn’t going to made up with taxes elsewhere? Electric surcharge tax, mileage tax, etc.

With EV's sitting at 2% of sales and America still being one of the cheapest places on earth to buy gas, being concerned about EV electric charging use is like being afraid of being eaten by shark. Statistically both are not worth being concerned about.

What’s concerning is the Social Engineering bureaucrats that want to “Save The World “ trying to force consumers to buy products they clearly are rejecting and forcing manufacturers to invest billions of dollars into that product.

Clearly the ones that buy plugins have embraced them and are not going back to driving fossils.

@vdiv that is an illogical point to make. So if you go to a plug in, are others people supposed to should the burden for the cost so that a wealthy person like you can drive electrically?

@Foncool- When have you ever been forced to buy a BEV instead of an ICE vehicle? No state in the USA has that mandate or that power over its citizens. #fakenews.

@CANADIANCOMMENTS you are naive, but polite.

By regulation the bureaucrats force the populous to purchase a certain type of product that they need. California tried this in 90s when their CARB Board mandated manufacturers produce a percentage of the cars be Zero emissions vehicles if they wanted to sell cars in the state. Numerous European cities (London, Paris etc.) have already placed bans on ICE to take effect in the near future. I wouldn’t be surprised if cities such as NYC, San Francisco, Montreal etc will do likewise if they haven’t already.

Don’t believe it will happen? Try to buy an incandescent light bulb, how about a toilet with a 3.5 gallon tank. (Currently smuggled in from socially irresponsible Canada). It is the job of these bureaucrats to save people from themselves for the betterment of society.
