Illinois Democrats Float Bill To Tax Electric Vehicles $1000 A Year - An Increase Of Over 5000%
A proposed bill in the Illinois legislature would raise the state’s annual registration fee for all-electric vehicles from $17.50 to a whopping $1,000.

The bill, HB 3233, calls for a number of new fees to fund a state infrastructure plan, including more than doubling gas taxes to 44 cents/gallon. License and registration fees would be increased across the board.

Why not $2,500? EV owners need to pay UP.

Seems a bit high, the average American uses about 500 gallons a year. My state has a 48 cent gas tax which works out to $242 dollars

So are PHEVs electric or gasoline? If they say gas it becomes a real bonus to buy one of those versus a pure EV.

@Vette71 - They are hybrids, so gasoline. The electric motor can be recharged by the engine while driving/braking or you can plug it in. P-Plug-in H-Hybrid, EV-Electric Vehicle.

To be clear the question is how does the Illinois government's bill classify them? Everybody here knows how they work. Hopefully they'll take your gasoline definition.

You would have to ask them. But if they state "all-electric vehicles" and that it does not apply to hybrids in the article, then it is only applying to EV's.

Virtually ALL states have had to recently revisit and adjust their gasoline taxes dues to the average increase in gas mileage causing their Trust Funds to near Bankruptcy. As the cost of repairing/building new roads continued to go up, their revenues generated went the opposite way. While higher funds were needed - I do not see the why they would have to be $1000 yet - unless they tax based on the cost of the car - where EVs are higher in price. Scenicbyway is correct in that the average fuel usage per car is about 500 gallons so $250 is more like it.

The tax on electric cars should be based on annual miles driven this way they contribute on par like similar gassers as they are taxed on gas used to offset road infrastructure costs. The more you use -the more you pay

They wanted to do that here for all vehicles, even replacing the petrol taxes, using mileage recorded at the annual vehicle inspection but got tripped up on how to handle out of state use of vehicles registered here. They dumped all toll booths for automatic electronic tolling or license plate billing only to find they are loosing tens of millions of dollars on out of state vehicles that don't mail in their tolls.

But, But, But, But.............I’m Helping Save The Planet, I thought if I bought an electric car I got tax credits I wouldn’t have to pay taxes for road repair and I could get Free charges at any charging station.
