Study Says A Majority Of Consumers Want Self-Driving Cars Provided They Are Safe

A majority of consumers have a positive attitude toward self-driving cars, and are awaiting their introduction with "anticipation," a survey by the consulting group Capgemini has found.

The survey, of more than 5,500 consumers and 280 automotive executives, seeks to understand consumer expectations and how automakers are responding to them. Among its findings: consumers trust established automakers more than startups to offer safe and reliable self-driving cars, and they are more optimistic than auto executives about overcoming the challenges and barriers to autonomous driving.

And in other news today from Fast Company....... "A new report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sheds light on a fatal crash involving a Tesla. Data from the damaged Tesla shows that the car’s autopilot system had been engaged 10 seconds prior to the collision. The car did not detect the driver’s hands on the wheel for eight seconds.

The accident took place in Delray Beach, Florida, on March 1, 2019. The car was traveling at 68 miles per hour in a 55 zone when it hit a semi-trailer. Like the accident in 2016 the top of the Tesla was sheared off. “Neither the preliminary data nor the videos indicate that the driver or the ADAS executed evasive maneuvers,” the report stated.

1.25 million people die in car crashes every year. If all cars in the world were Teslas, Autopilot could kill 612,500 people a year and still be twice as safe... think about it.

Planes are the safest form of transportation in the world. They still crash. Does a crash make them less safe than driving or taking a train? No, it does not.. have to look at aggregate stats.

Nobody needs a talking car as the industry found out, but it seemed to be a popular idea at the time. There is a home owner in my area with a first gen Model S. It has no cameras and no ability to become self driving. The owner does not care. That isn't why he got the car. Self driving may create more problems than it solves. It should likely remain in the lab for the time being.
