Rumour Mill: Toyota Working On 450HP Twin Turbo Hybrid V6 For Next-Gen Tundra

The Toyota Tundra is one of the oldest full-size trucks on sale today. Whereas manufacturers like Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet have each updated their own trucks recently, Toyota hasn't had a brand-new Tundra since 2001. But that's all about to change; spy photos prove a new Tundra is on the horizon, and new rumors indicate it could have a modern engine underhood.

An insider leaked info to the site TFLTruck.com, suggesting the new Tundra will have a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter hybrid V6 borrowed from the Lexus LS 500h. Its output should be in the neighborhood of 450 horsepower (335 kilowatts) and 500 pound-feet (677 Newton-meters) of torque, and gas mileage could be around 30 miles per gallon, or better. In the Lexus, that same setup produces 354 hp (263 kW) and returns 33 MPG.

Because they NEED TO in order to remain relevant. Toyota needs a Raptor, but for crying out loud, do not call it a TuRDPro because that sounds like something Mayor Pete BootyGag would have in the en suite of his bedroom.

They may do better with a diesel engine and a dually option with a 5th wheel this go-around. A Baja worthy ride would be fun to see but I wonder what the sales numbers are between a Raptor and a fully decked out farmer's model.

If Toyota had brains they would repurpose the Silverado or F150.

@MD- If sports cars don't matter to Toyota, there is no good reason why trucks should.

That's a stupid comment. Pickups are big money and sports cars aren't.

Matt - that depends on what you believe is the purpose of having Sport Cars is.
Sports car generate more "free advertising" than any other vehicles - and getting into racing is normally an advertising expense instead of a development one.

OF course - for Toyota - Trucks may be more exciting

@TomM can't you find another friend to be there for until his death and swindle his money from him while he is in diminished capacity because when you were busy doing that a while back, it was so lovely without you.

@MD- If they didn't care about a car that is a touch-stone for the company or so they say, then I am not sure what they care about. Yes trucks are big unit sellers in North America. 2018 Tundra sales were only 118k, best year was 2008 with 137k. Tacoma is at 245k or so annually. Can they make a full size pickup that can sell in the 300k-600k unit range? If so, what variants are needed? Which sell the most?

It's gotta having a Heavy Duty burly diesel variant.

Should've happened long time ago. Current LS 500h's 354hp is simply miserable. Bump it to 450hp sounds more like it, and good achievement with a 6 cylinder in lieu of 8

Guaranteed it will be the ugliest truck on the road next to the Tacoma, and there is zero chance they squeeze 30mpg out of it. And it's probably still two years away.
