CAR WARS! Executive Sedan Showdown: 5-Series vs. A6 vs. E-Class vs. ES

CAR WARS! Executive Sedan Showdown: 5-Series vs. A6 vs. E-Class vs. ES
In the luxury car kingdom, one could argue that there's really no reason to buy anything more than an executive sedan. These are mid-size sedans that have all the technology one could ask for and they also are priced reasonably — for the most part.

The latest one I've had the pleasure of driving is the all-new Lexus ES. While it used to be the entry-level vehicle for Lexus that has changed. Now it occupies the space also left by the GS sedan. That means its roomier and drives more plush than before. In other words, it's not just a Toyota Camry any more.

But, how does it compete against the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

While all do things a bit differently, this is a very heated competition. See how it shakes out, below, in this Carwow clip.

Here it is, the ultimate posh saloon group test! The A6, 5 Series and E-Class are established as the class leaders to beat when it comes to executive mid-size saloons. But with seemingly so little between them, which one stands out from the crowd? And should these German powerhouses be worried by the all-new Lexus ES? Stick with Mat for his latest group test, and let us know which one you’d choose in the comments below!

Lexless looks like a kid with a mouth full of tooth braces.

Agreed and I would have much rather seen how the more comparable GS performed against the German trio but I suppose the ES is the latest offering from Lexus

The GS would have fared worse. It's pretty inferior to the ES.

That Mat Watson guy is such a better car reviewer than Doug DeMuro - I don't know how Mat does on Youtube, but hopefully it is much better than Doug.

Aside from being dull, overall, its also annoying how Doug brags about what a YouTube stud he is and how successful his is at his "job". I've stopped watching Doug's videos because they don't say anything and because he is sort of annoying overall.

Mat Watson is always entertaining whereas Doug DeMuro is always grating and shrill.

I don't know why but the most annoying youtube reviewers (to my taste) are the more popular ones. Doug is one. Redline Reviews is another. Another channel with two guys who drive two different cars but talk to each other and look at each other while driving as if they're in the same car, can't remember the name. Another guy who comes from a super wealthy family, can't remember his channel name either. TFL is another.

Carwow (Mat Watson) is probably my favorite one at the moment. Along with anything with Carlos Lago. Autofughuel (sp?) is another one, but those reviews tend to be super long. Smoking Tire is decent.

I found it interesting how closely the ES was priced to the A6/E/5 because here it's priced more like an A4/C/3.

ES looks like the evolution of the previous gen Accord. Not a good thing. And it looks a class below this German trio.

Of the German three, it's a tough choice. I'd choose the E53 over the M550i and S6, but would choose the A6 over the 540i and E450. Wouldn't even consider the E350/530i or A6 with 4 cylinder.

Well the ES is an A4/C/3 class car in a comparison one level up.

No, 3/C/A4 is simply no match in size and quality. ES is perfect contender in this group, though, I'd always choose 5 and E over ES and A6 for RWD and FI engine, and maybe that additional 10% brand recognition

@dlin The ES was designed to battle the A4/3/C. And that what it's marketed against in its largest market for which it was specifically designed.

The ES has always been the odd car out. Lexus produced the LS and GS on Premium RWD platforms - while the ES started out on the Camry platform and moved to the Avalon Platform in this most current production - both Toyota FWD car platforms. The ES - as a result - is a little larger inside than most competition - but it is based on a Front Wheel Drive Mass market platform which puts it at a competitive disadvantage, simply not as competent. . In my area - it sells well with the seniors.

By the way Matt - Yes - I do know that the Avalon is a LWB version of the Camry - and that the ES is based on that LWB version of that platform instead of the sort CAMRY version. And what I said IS true - truth is not out of touch.

AS far as seven tiers of premium cars - that is something I never said. Obviously you are having another one of your episodes - I will pray for you!

The Krauts may drive better but the Lexus will last 3X longer and require minimal repairs and maintenance compared to the others. Not really an issue for those who lease short term and don't drive much but once the warranties run out the expense of German cars becomes quite evident and hence the dramatic depreciation of these cars.

I for one am done with German cars especially after 11 BMW's as I value my hard earned money way to much and prefer to spend it on things that are important and really matter like hookers and coke ;-)

Be careful, I think there was a warning in there about hitting your head while banging in the back seat of the Lexus. Maybe they need one of those little yellow warning signs on the ceiling in the rear.

BMW's 5-Series is plagued by the same problems hurting all BMWs - the interiors look old, the exterior design has barely changed in 7 years and the driving dynamics no longer provide that ultra-sporty feel. It's fitting, then, that BMW has been surpassed by Mercedes-Benz long ago and despite Benz's struggles in the U.S. and globally this year, BMW is still not even close to catching it in sales on a global basis.

BMW certainly recognize the issue and tried to do fix it, starting with the G20 3, but, alas, didn't succeed

1 - The last two generations of the Es350 were based on the Avalon - not the Camry - and were larger cars also.

2 - Cadillac is bringing out the CT5 - which will be Executive size - but priced against the 3 series. I suspect that this will at least be a winning strategy for Cadillac - and it might end up lowering the prices of these cars - at least that out the door - as Cadillac traditionally get higher discount than these do as well.

TomM the Ignorant speaks again!

Do you not know that the Avalon is an LWB Camry? Are you really that out of touch.

So is this "executive class size" the same moronic BS as your seven tiers of premium cars?
