Used EV Prices Soar As Demand Outstrips Supply

Prices of second-hand electric and hybrid vehicles are soaring as demand outstrips supply, according to one of the country’s largest used-car marketplaces.

Auto Trader says electric vehicles - also known as EVs - are rocketing in value, with prices growing 11 percent. In contrast, the average price growth rate for all vehicles has slowed to 1.5 percent - the lowest rate for almost two years.

What’s interesting is for the 1st time overall sales of EV’s are going up while gas prices are going down or stabilizing in most areas

Gas prices are going up up up here and we'll sell you an EV but we never want it back.

The problem with these older models (at least for me) is the lack of range. Few of them other than Tesla can get even close to 100 miles. Throw in some HVAC and inclement weather, most are 50 miles or less. That would cover my commute (barely), but leave nothing left for the rest of the day.

Not only is lack of range an issue - but how long the batteries last before needing replacement (AS well as the electric engines - I know one man who - has had his engines replaced in a Tesla Twice - this cannot be cheap). WE simply do not know what future costs are going to be.

For Example- the current cost of a replacement Battery Pack for a Bolt is over $15,000 for the part alone plus installation. How many miles will you get before you have to fork over this amount.

It is super rare to have to replace a battery pack. The electric motors on early Model S cars last about 100,000 miles, but replacement is covered under warranty. The newest gen PM motor is designed to last 1 million miles. The current battery is designed to last 500,000 miles at 70% charge. Next year's batteries will be semi-solid state and designed for 1 million miles.

People are ignorant about the finite life span of a lithium battery. They are buying used EV's with the majority of the usable battery life exhausted.
Replacement cost of batteries is painfully exorbitant.

The batteries can last hundreds of thousands of miles and even then they slowly depreciate, they don't just stop working.

Where is the real-world, non-Tesla-hype, scientific data to support that?. #ItDoesn'tExist
