Could Toyota's Supra Be The BMW You Wanted All Along?
BMW’s "Ultimate Driving Machine" moniker has been contested by the aficionadi of late. Enthusiasts, brand loyalists, and those in the know have howled into the void as they’ve watched the Bavarian brand produced larger, heavier, and more complex machines over the last 20 years. Gone are the days of simple performance, replaced with a confused luxury identity. Well, take note of the Toyota Supra, internet denizens: It might have a different badge on the hood, but it's what you've been asking BMW to build for decades.

Rule #1 of car design - don't make the car fugly.

Both the Z4 and the Supra are F'ugly. This project may go down in history as one of the worst collaborations ever.

At least the Toyota/Subaru linkup resulted in a well-priced decent handling sports car.

Looks are subjective. The performance figures aren't, though, frankly they're spectacular.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a27456854/2020-toyota-supra-testing-acceleration-zero-to-60/

I'll summarize -- 0-60 in 3.8, 12.3 in the 1/4, and a ridiculous 1.07g on the skidpad.

Great performance in a beautiful car, and I'd be interested. There are plenty of other options that tick both boxes.

It cost too much to be relevant in any way.

I like the Supra, but it is $10-15,000 too expensive.

So the 1998 Toyota Supra performance was,

0-06 in 4.5, 13.1 in the 1/4 and pulled .98 on the skidpad and cost $40,508 1998, in today's dollars that"s $63,507.

Stealing JRobUSC numbers,

0-60 in 3.8, 12.3 in the 1/4, 1.07g on the skidpad, and Starts out at $50,920

A few questions,

What car at $35-$40k pulls those numbers

It's over $11k cheaper than it's predecessor and handily outperforms it, How is it overpriced?

You can get a Shelby GT350 for the price of the Supra and it's so much better.

But the Shelby is not, it slower and doesn't handle as well,

0-60 4.2 12.4 for 1/4 mile and pulls 1.02 G's on the skid pad. It cost $10k more and has lots of complaints about a $25k car interior.

To be the Supra performance you have to go to the Shelby R and you are pushing $70K

Then you've never driven a Shelby. Go buy a Supra and try to keep up with me at Willow Springs. You'll be sadly disgraced.

Since almost no one has driven the Supra, I'll trust the reviewers.

Looked and sat in the new Z4 Toyota/BMW at my local BMW dealer yesterday. The window sticker showed $61,000.

Fist, you cannot get past the low quality work and parts of the car. The bean counter accountants designed this vehicle for sure. The upholstery is loaded with wrinkles and looks sloppy. Instead of attractive stainless or chrome fittings, there is plastic pieces in black. Opening up the hood, you cannot help but stare at the shock tower reinforcing braces. Instead of cast or strong h.d. tubing, they use a light weight aluminum narrow tube hammered flat and drilled with ONE hold at each end. Looks like the local next door teenage cobbled them together as a favor. PRIMITIVE! This car is a big disappointment!

Not a bad car as long as your under 5'9. Tall guys will not be able to fit in this car.
