Wranglers Seen At GM Proving Grounds - Are They Preparing An Answer To Jeep?

In the middle part of this decade, as sales of the Jeep Wrangler (and the Jeep brand itself) rose into the stratosphere, speculation cropped up that General Motors would not let its rival dominate the off-road SUV market unchallenged. The company offered hints that it might field something of its own.

A GM SUV with serious trail-rated chops is still talked about today, even after GMC brand boss Duncan Aldred, speaking in 2017, said, “I don’t think it’s worth trying to take on Wrangler.” Even after the reborn Chevrolet Blazer turned out to be an Acadia-based crossover. Blame Ford’s upcoming Bronco and the Wrangler’s continued popularity for the continued speculation.

Now, the internet is once again abuzz after photos revealed two Wranglers at GM’s Milford Proving Grounds.

Internal GM meeting question #1, “can we make a vehicle that looks like a Wrangler utilizing the Chevy Equinox platform, give it our crappy “Jet Black” interior, give it a crappy standard power train so customers have to spend more for the engine that ought to be standard, build it in Mexico and charge Wrangler prices?

Given that the Wrangler exists and the Bronco is set to rock and roll, GM need to revive and reimagine Hummer.

A Hummer revival could do well for them if they resist the temptation to do things the GM way and badge engineer a Equinox into a Hummer.

AS the market has changed from sedans to raised Station Wagons with potential for 4x4 (The so called crossovers) - and other truck like vehicles - GM still dominates in one category - the large Body on Frame SUVs - ie - real trucks.

When you add in the coming onslaught of EVs - which I expect GM will have some crossover like vehicles in - you really had to expect that - around the world - using regular and so called emerging market platforms (Read that cheap) - GM would replace the huge number of cars it had with other vehicles - so a Body on Frame Smaller suv makes sense - likely based on their mid-size truck platform (Colorado). The problem with that is - they do not have enough production capacity for the trucks right now - for the US market - but there is the rest of the world to go after.

However - at least in this case - the SUV was invented by GM - in 1935
