Will Cadillac Even EXIST 10 Years From Today?
Boy. From where we're sitting, it appears that General Motors' luxury division, Cadillac, is in a world of trouble. I wouldn't say it's circling the drain but it certainly is entering the downward spiral.

Just check out its most recent debuts in form of the XT6, CT5 and now the CT4-V and CT5-V. Unless these vehicles drive like they're on magic carpets, never break down and are priced right, they all are MAJOR misses.

If they were off here or there, that's one thing. This is another.

The XT5 and Escalade are dated and can't stand up to the competition without massive incentivization. They need a serious, all-new generation of these two products, ASAP. But if the XT6 is any indication of what's in store we'll need to bring in the body bags.

Having said that, we have to ask: Is Cadillac on course to go the way of the dodo bird in 10 year's time?

As long as Cadillacs are mired in alphanumeric naming BS and do not have commanding style that is universally lauded, they will essentially have no identity. Lincoln is rebounding better.

I don't get the obsession with the names.

The alphanumerics are pretty far down the list of things Cadillac needs to change, in my opinion:

1: Better interiors
2: Better NVH
3: Better dealership experience
4: Refinement of styling details
5: Better power v. competitors
6: Better option packaging/standard equipment
7: Flagship sedan/grand touring coupe
8: Names

NewQ by that stupid illogic, you'd be OK with:

The 911 being called the Porsche Sunny Excellent and the Corvette being called the XRQ17S.

Cadillac has storied NAMES and those NAMES are their HERITAGE.

But 10-20 years ago, fanatics complained that Cadillac using old skool model names made the brand look old & stodgy despite the various improvements it was making.

let just face it, Cadillac wont be considered successful until the brand produces something that almost copies an S/E/C-class...from basic to AMG trim.

I think Cadillac will still be here, but I think it might still be struggling. The current Mgt of GM is simply not getting it done. Cadillac should be well on its way to powerful success yet each new vehicle is resoundingly criticized as not enough and each launch has been met with disappointment.

The Lincoln Navigator is a smash hit, the new Aviator will be a smash hit, the Corsair... I predict will do extremely well. GM is run by idiots and cheap b@$$tards that are either incompetent, don't give a crap or both.

Why do their newest vehicles come out and end up in 2nd or 3rd place in a comparison review... did mgt not have an oppty to bring out something spectacular? Again, incompetence or stupidity... Bean counters cannot run this company there must be balance but real long term profits come with a strong brand and they're simply failing at establishing Cadillac as a standard for America let alone the world. Sr Mgt should be ashamed of themselves for wasting billions and putting out the current crop.

My wife drives a 2015 GLK and its better than the XT4 or the XT5.. and since the XT6 is a slightly stretched XT5, that car too... these are the absolutely most recent vehicles and the GLK was done in 15.

Agree w/ValHallakey & Matt... names and gorgeous "gotta have" vehicles... but we're wasting breath and mind power... GM mgt is deaf....

GM's problem is and has been execution. They have the resources to produce best in class for at least a few segments, but always seem to settle for good enough.
When you announce you are going to challenge the top tier brands you better do it. Something like the XT6 kills all credibility.

Sure it will. Kia will buy it out during a GM fire sale. It will be renamed Kiallac.

Escalade is one of the biggest cash cows in the industry. A vehicle built on pickup bones/powertrains selling for $85-100K+ ...

I'd kill Buick in the USA, give Cadillacs names, and borrow a page from Lincoln.

I'd second that. The orange car in the middle is my favorite. What's the name if it again?

Not as a Sedan company. The only way they survive and thrive is if they copy the blueprint of Lincoln and focus exclusively on SUV's. If they would have done this 10 years ago, instead of prioritizes being a high- performance luxury brand with the "V" series, Cadillac would be in a far much better position now. For the record, if these vehicles above was what the old Cadillac president was working up, I'm glad they fired is ass because these designs are pitiful & forgettable.

Indeed. Sales of the CT6 are HORRIBLE with the CTS and ATS not far behind. I seriously doubt the CT5/6 will do anything to reverse that.

Meanwhile, Lincoln is doing exceedingly well with crossovers and NAMES. #WinningStrategy

I saw a 2019 CT6-V yesterday in black and it looked great. de Nysshen essentially killed this car when he rolled it out with the 4 cyl and promoted that. Sell only the V with the V8 and put a luxury interior in it.
Cadillac lost the window on becoming a top tier premium brand.

Yes - but they will have a different line up again - this time including EV's as well as at least a few new 4x4s as well.

There will be a new Escalade in the next year - and it will have the badly needed IRS - and still be incredibly profitable for GM - along with a Large Crossover based on the OMEGA platform.

However - since the Lincoln Continental sales have been abysmal over the last year - that is not the page I would borrow from. I don't think the Naming Convention is holding back sales as much as the poor packaging of the Ct/Ats was. Now those two will be the largest interior in their classes - and that will make the difference there.

Lincoln new the Continental would have a tough time in the top tier against the likes of the German trio and the Lexus LS. So they used an existing platform to at least have a flagship and used the resources for developing more compelling SUVs where the market was heading. Result, the Navigator which has had an IRS for over a year (Escalade 2 years away still). the Nautilus and soon the Corsair, all of which are receiving excellent reviews. Cadillac has an excellent CT6 which is having trouble finding buyers and the XT6, a bland crossover.

The Continental had one mission and that was to reestablish the brand as an American luxury brand and it succeeded admirably. The return to a name was universally praised. The approach of being unabashedly American in its luxury was also lauded. It was a Hail Mary that worked even if sales were not astronomical.

The CT6 is a dismal failure. CT6 means nothing, but Elmiraj would have been "something". The styling was nothing new.

These sedans r for China volume... Not much in the US.

Biggest problem for Caddy is Lincoln's stunning line-up of class-leading "named" crossovers... Putting the hurt on bland XT456.. Especially when cuv is the market focus.. NOT sedans... Duh!!!

GM top management are wussies and lost when it comes to Cadillac. Hire the right general manager for the brand and open the purse strings and this train wreck can be fixed. The problem is GM top managers are too rigid and too well entrenched to listen and not interested in making the required investment. Until they do the brand will muddle along and may die one day.

I don't think GM can afford to let Cadillac disappear. I agree with almost all the comments above, in particular I agree with Matt's point on names which we have discussed before. I also think they need a Halo car and it should have been the El Miraj. Maybe it is too late for that one, but they still need one and they need to do everything on it right as NewQ's list.

But rather than lead the segment, Cadillac was beat to market with an IRS by Lincoln. It also has a better interior. Cadillac's new Escalade with IRS is still two years away. From the financial side it may look great. They are still selling well. They are losing or have lost the leadership position in this all important segment. GM builds cars with the assumption they are going to need big cash incentive to sell rther thn building desirable.

I love Cadillac and I have had 6 of them. I have been driving Escalades since 2007, my last one was a 2016 Platinum Escalade. I also have a gorgous 1968 Eldorado with a rebuilt drivetrain.

I just spent more money and got a 2019 Range Rover SC. I had no idea the Range Rover was so much nicer!

My main consideration on not waiting for the new Escalade was the uninspired XT6 and the “new" full size pick up trucks. Clearly GM has put the Bean Counters in charge again. So I started test driving other brands and left Cadillac.

I hope Cadillac improves their vehicles I would love to be driving them again.

I don't know what in hell you're on about, but the current Escalade is perfectly fine for its price point. We love ours and I guarantee that it is far more reliable and durable than the horrible Range Rover.
