The TERMINATOR? BMW To Take On All Comers With The 616HP M8 Competition

BMW has finally applied proper M division treatment to the flagship 8 Series, revealing the brand new BMW M8 Competition. The result is the most powerful production M car ever and new territory for BMW, given the brand never gave us a showroom ready M8 version of the original E31 8 Series.

Both coupe and convertible versions are on sale now priced from £123,435 and £130,435 respectively, and it’ll be on UK roads this October. Here in the UK the new M8 is offered exclusively as a ‘Competition’ badged model, with the regular M8 not heading to our market.

This won't terminate anything. Buyers in this segment want a luxury car first and a sporty car second. BMW has the formula backwards because it created a sporty car first with luxury as a second priority.

If buyers in this segment want sporty, they'll just buy a Porsche 911 Turbo.

The S-Class Coupe will continue to outsell the BMW 8-Series.

Lets revisit this in a year. Mercedes is discontinuing S Class coupe and convertible and planning on building...wait for it, a MORE SPORTY FOUR SEAT SL. Sounds to me like BMW ahead of the curve not behind it for those not interested in a Porsche.

I do not agree that Mercedes is making less attractive Luxury Cars - In fact - Mercedes clear lead is because they actually built their Luxury cars based on what their Buyers told them - and they even kept the Maybach group as upper end Luxury. I will say that having both a Phantom and a Maybach - I would find it hard to justify spending another $200,000 for the Phantom over the Maybach. However, the high end Luxury BMWs (Not Rolls) simply do not compete well in that area - and likely will not do so in the future. BMW was largely based on its success in the compact sports car category - not in Full Size Luxury car -but I will bet YOU did not consider Rolls as being BMW.

Both Manufacturers have a regular car line - a sport (Amg/M) - and a Luxury (Rolls/Maybach) although it appears that Mercedes keeps its sports offerings better separated from the Luxury ones

What I expect is that there will be a MAJOR reduction in the number of offerings from both - when their EVs start to come out.

PUGPROUD: You are right, thas why Mercedes now is building less atractive luxury cars and BMW is building less atractive Sport Cars. I hate the fact that every day is harder to see the differences betteween MB and BMW, BMW dreams about be as luxurios as MB and MB dreams about been as Sporty as BMW...sad.

Ford once took a very cool T-Bird 2 seater and morph it into a 4 seater square bird with fantastic resulting sales success. MB may be following that path to success with the SL.
