Lawmakers Grill GM On Abandonment Of Ohio Plant While Investing Abroad
General Motors CEO Mary Barra on Wednesday defended the automaker's plan to sell an assembly plant in Ohio, arguing the plan to sell the plant to a little known electric vehicle company was thoroughly vetted and had a chance of success.

Barra told Reuters in a brief interview Wednesday, after a series of meetings on Capitol Hill, that the company did not plan to add a new vehicle to its Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant that ended production in March because it has additional unused U.S. capacity. Last month, GM announced it was in talks to sell the plant to little known EV firm Workhorse Group Inc. and an affiliated, newly formed entity.

Yes - there are still tens of thousands of GM manufacturing employees in the USA - PLUS - the allied workers for the support Companies supplying GM with sub-assemblies - seats, interior and exterior parts - ETC. Closing down GM would put the USA into a recession at the least. George Bush and the Republicans that did it - had really no choice but to do something to support the American Car Manufacturers. I note FORD is doing the same things that GM is doing - closing down car manufacturing and the seriously old plants that assemble the cars - and moving to SUV/Truck - including more Mexican production. If car manufacturers want to survive in a global market - taking advantage of the greater profitability of cheaper labor around the world is where they ALL are going;. Forcing GM not to have that ability would only put them at a disadvantage.

I think it is important for the US to retain the engineering skills and overall ability to develop/deploy/manage and perform large scale manufacturing. I hope we can find the way much as VW has (at least for some of their cars) to build affordable cars in a higher labor cost country. VW seems to have done it via massive automation and less labor per car from what I have read.
