Mercedes AMG Releases The World's Most Powerful 4 Cylinder

Mercedes-AMG has done it again: they've created the most powerful production turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the world. Its new "M 139" motor is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 416 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, or effectively 208 horsepower per liter of displacement.

The new powerplant eclipses the high-performance variant found in the Mercedes-AMG A45, which featured a 376-horsepower turbo four-banger (187.5 horsepower per liter) that previously held the bragging rights of being the most powerful of its kind. Just to put that into perspective, that's higher horsepower output per liter than the Bugatti Chiron hypercar.

This is what's needed on the next Supra and M2 to achieve REAL 50/50 weight distribution

LOL I love how the guys at AMG and Benz keep the same energy for a 4 cylinder as they do their 8’s and 12’s. “So we have to make a 4 cylinder for the environment?...well it will be THE MOST POWERFUL 4 Cylinder in the world”!

THere is NO WAY I would be convinced to purchase such a car/engine combination until it has been on the market for a couple of years at least. It is bad enough to be heavily boosted - but this is extreme. I see lots of blown head gaskets coming - at least.

I agree with TomM.

This is going to be a killer engine. The CLA45 is going to be pretty impressive with it.

A killer engine or one that kills itself after 10K miles?

I can remember when 100 HP per liter was considered an amazing accomplishment. This is amazing, but I do wonder about longevity.

It will be interesting to see what the USA’s crappy gasoline quality does to the actual street HP figures on this engine. I imagine the ECU will have to retard the timing so much that power is down 1/3.

Having a 4-cyclinders producing such HP is like asking a kid to perform an adult work. When will people learn, it will not last long.

It might last longer than MB's electronic controls

Question - will it go "BOOM" before or just after the 48,000 mile warranty is up?

I suspect right around 4 years, 2 months or 53,000 miles whichever comes first!

German cars are designed to be leased and to be covered under warranty during the lease. Definitely DO NOT buy this. If you must have this engine, LEASE it.
