FCA Partners With Aurora Innovation To Leap Frog GM And Ford By Making RAM Trucks Autonomous

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles U.S. is partnering up with autonomous systems provider Aurora Innovation in an attempt to develop and build self-driving commercial vehicles.

According to FCA officials, this move is meant to help them explore the possibilities of using Aurora’s systems on the RAM and Fiat Professional brand vehicle lines, although RAM remains the main focus. Prototypes could be on the road within the next 3-5 years, reports Autonews Europe.

“As part of FCA’s autonomous vehicle strategy, we will continue to work with strategic partners to address the needs of customers in a rapidly changing industry,” stated FCA CEO Mike Manley. “Aurora brings a unique skill set combination with advanced and purposeful technology that complements and enhances our approach to self driving.”

I am sure that everyone else in this group(Especially "SorryMAtt"!) has complete confidence in FCA to pull this one off - and cannot wait to be able to SIT in a full size truck while it drives itself on FCA software!

No manufacturer can take the risk of not working toward developing autonomous vehicles and all manufacturers are concerned if they ever see a return on these heavy investments. The big spend may lead to the big dead end for some before autonomous driven vehicles clear all hurdles...reliable technology, legislative approval, consumer acceptance, assignment of liability, insurance coverage and cost, etc. Not saying it won't happen but how long will it take, at what cost and which manufacturers will spend their way into the arms of others or bankruptcy along the way. Everyone is all in but not everyone will win or survive. Big money is trying to make a quick buck (Tesla, Ferrari) but the stock multiples on auto manufacturers overall should languish in the single digits.

Autonomous truck? Does not mean the Ram will fill up the gas tank by itself?
Having to refill the truck gas tank really is an onerous chore I would rather pass on.
