BMW’s V5 for 2009?

The production version of the BMW Space Functional Concept will be called either the V5 or V6, followed by a more compact BMW V3 model.

The estimated price is between $45,000-$55,000. This is not a traditional minivan with sliding doors, rather a tall wagon or as they call it "sports tourer".

The future monovolume sport of the Bavarian house,is destined to rival with Mercedes R- Class.

The V5 is going to weigh more because it will be large (expect 4600-4800 lbs - the Merc is something like 4900+).

The BMW V5 will be also a frightening competitor of all the currently available MPV models on the market such as the Chrysler Voyager or Renault Espace.

The V5 will be for those customers that prioritize maximizing space and driving dynamics over off road "sytle" but can’t cary their family into a 5-series or E320 wagon.

Nobody wanted a Chrysler Pacifica. Nobody is wanting the R Class. Why does BMW feel a need to do this one?

I could hold so many clients in one of these vehicles. If built, you know Lexus would rush to the market, an Avalon-based version.

I agree. People seem to want a car, a SUV(crossover or truck based) or a truck. The Rclass is much better than the Pacifica though. The Paacifica has a very bloated look about it.

This isn't exactly in the RX's class. The RX is more of an X5 competitor- similar size, price and engine.

This is an R-Class competitor, though, and I hate it.

I said this before and I'll say it again... BMW is the anti-Mercedes! The R-Class has given Mercedes a bad name-- HAS BMW NOT NOTICED? No minivans! I'm starting a petition!

This is hideous, BMW_FAN. If it was a Lexus, you would not buy it, even if it had the same performance characteristics. Even if it looks better than this, it will be a sad day for BMW when it comes out.

I like Audis AND BMWs, FYI- I just don't like some of the BMW drivers, like yourself. I am going to get a 3 Series coupe or 5 Series for my next winter car, and there's even a possibility of a 650ci replacing my S4, but I may shell out for something like a 911 instead.

This is not ugly. The reason i hate the R-Class is because it looks too much like a mini van. This dosen't. It looks more like a SUV. If this is turned into the new X5 it will look alot better than the current X5.

Btw, V5 DOES NOT look like R-class. To get an idea how V5's general shape looks like check this Hyundai Genus concept (general shape of a huge coupeish hatch cum wagon):

General design idea for BMW X6 & V5 is a very old idea. And, well, designers do shift jobs & companies. So going from BMW to Hyundai European Design Center is not so impossible like it sounds. ;-) And Hyundai is playing on "being first" card - to get some attention.

Who wants tall sports cars? Americans do. Marketing researches showed especially Americans wanted sport cars with commanding / high driving position. That's why BMW is creating SAC segment, and other carmakers will follow with their cars.

Genus = RX? I don't think so: Genus is much more like enlarged hatch / wagon, not a SUV. It's much lower than a SUV. Proportions are much different. And I'm talking about general shape not details!

Right now SAC is still non-existent, yet many new models will emerge in the near future by BMW, Infiniti, Porsche, Audi, MB, Alfa Romeo, VW, Ford, Acura, Saab, Hyundai etc.

Product planning strategists see trends you have no clue they are coming. SAC segment is one of them.

Btw, a few years ago we heard complaints who really needed sporty SUVs, cross-overs, 4dr coupes, compact SUVs, sporty MPVs, etc. And all the new products / segments have proven to be very successful. Why? Because the product planning was based on trend & market researches ... And latest ones predict SAC segment to be a real hit in the near future.

Are you on drugs! SUV's being decent cars? SAC being sporty? ON WHAT PLANET! It is impossible to have a sports car with a high driving position, it's called the laws of physics but judging that you like SUV's i'm sure you haven't got any idea.
A high driving position put simply for thick people like you compromises performance like nothing else, it raises the cars centre of gravity thus destorying that cars handling capability, not too mention the additional weight which in turn impacts the performance, breaking, acceleration and so on.
There is a good reason why even suped up SUV such as the Gemballa version of the Porsche Cayenne are inept performance cars. Your obviously american and probably think that the only thing that matters is driving in a straight line, well if so i hope you find a bend in a road and drive off the edge.

Wait to see (& drive) X6, and you will be VERY surprised how sporty can SAC be!
