Back To Basics: High School Thinks It About Time To Teach Teens How To Change A Tire And Check Oil

One Kentucky high school is teaching its students basic life skills to prepare them for the outside world. “Adulting 101” is a class offered at Fern Valley High School in Louisville that covers topics ranging from how to properly wash and dry clothes to changing a flat tire.

As home economics, shop, and auto tech have gone the way of the dinosaur or moved mostly to vocational schools, many high school graduates are leaving the security of their parents’ homes with no idea about how to deal with some of life’s most common problems. Enter Fern Creek High School, where students can take the three-day course which covers topics like money, home and health, professional life, and even basic auto maintenance.

That should have been mandatory 20 years ago, but this is now a moot point. 5 years from now most cars won't use oil and there is a good chance tires will change to become more durable and puncture proof. Some airless tires are already being tested with the Bolt.

The other "adulting" topics should be taught to teens though.

"5 years from now most cars won't use oil" So five years from now, 100% of the vehicles on the planet will be replaced by EVs?

You do realize that the new tire system will not be universal in 5 years AND that said tires WILL be prone to failure too, right?

You are really pretty dumb if you believe the BS that comes out of your mouth.

I think 5 years from now, most teens/gen Zers will not buy cars but will instead pay very little for taking carsharing rides in autonomous EVs. It won't make financial sense or be worth the effort to own an ICE given the other options, including many used cars.

As for tires, even today there are already runflats and many companies are ditching the spares. Not one Tesla has ever come with a spare tire, it is already not worth the additional weight.

Totally for this, learn the basics. A short while back I was waiting to use the air pump at a station behind a young man with a ten year old Focus. Sensing he was in over his head by the way he was eye balling the tire pressure for each wheel I asked him if he knew how much pressure was correct for each tire. When he said he had no clue I showed him the label on the inside of the door jam. I then asked him if he knew how to measure the current pressure in each tire. Again he said no. I pulled out my gauge and showed him how to use it to read the pressure before and after adding air. I stepped back letting him use the gauge to correctly inflate all four tires. He could not have been more thankful and I could see he was pleased with himself for doing it correctly. I'm all for teaching young men and young women the basics for practical reasons and to not be taken advantage of by service providers. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to cars.

Why do schools need to teach kids this stuff? The parents should be.

Well, one look at current parenting practices probably shows why the don't.

At least in NJ - High Schools still have Driver's Ed classes that qualify students who pass them for insurance discounts. These classes include Changing a tire - although most new cars today do not come with a spare to change it to - as well as Checking Fluids - and the lights that light on a Dash too. It was a couple of weeks in the Phys Ed classes.
