Do You Buy This Story? BMW Claims The M8 Is Their Supercar, No Need For Anything With More Performance
Sorry, BMW fans, but M Division head Markus Flasch tells Australia's Which Car says that the Bavarian brand has no intention to introduce a dedicated supercar. In his view, the new M8 fills that role by being "ultimate performance machine that we offer; it will be the fastest ever BMW at the Nürburgring Nordschleife," he tells Which Car.

Flasch calls the M8 "a Porsche Turbo killer,” which is an ambitious statement. The BMW uses the brand's 4.4-liter V8 from the M5 that makes 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters) of torque in the normal tune or 617 hp (460 kW) for the Competition version. The current 911 Turbo offers 533 hp (397 kW) in standard trim or 572 hp (427 kW) for the S variant.

BMW knows their limits, they can only go so high end without embarrassing themselves like they did with the mediocre performing i8 and the oversized 4 series coupe they call an 8 series when it’s a 6 at best.

The last and best high end attempt by bmw was the Z8, if they can’t match that or better, forget about it. The 8 series coupe is forgettable

For their customer base probably ok but they need a performance 2 seater above the Z4 to my point of view.

From a MARKETING standpoint they are 100% CORRECT. The M8 is theoretically attainable to their clientele and there is a direct lineage to the downmarket 4 Series, as a super car is does what a supercar should do: imbue the rest of the line with its aura.

Essentially, this is the Corvette strategy.

It is the strategy that Toyota is following--for now.

The NSX is the opposite of this. The Ford GT is the opposite of this. The GTR is the opposite of this. The LFA was the opposite of this.

Gee - an essay - and we already know everything in it

What BMW needs to do is go back to engineering their cars to ride better - and become the Ultimate driving machine - again.

I can be ok with that. But why can't it just look better?

Good strategy. Put the development resources where there is better return.

Of course all the teenage boys and wannabe teenage boys on here will decry this because they want some ridiculous hypercar that they can buy a poster of and self-pleasure to during their "alone" time.

Lets face it..do you see a BMW fan paying 2 millions for a car? answer is NO. But yes, I see a lot of customer willing to buy the MB AMG Project ONE. So they know that they will be spending a lot of money in RD and most of their ULTRAEXOTIC car wouldn´t be sold. Besides that it, requires F1 technology and a big investment with low profit only to enhance the image.. business wise, is not, (as Yoda would say).

They may not need a more powerful car. But they sure do need better looking ones.

I don't think they need a hyper car, but they do need a high performance engineering showcase. Some things have an intangible value and being perceived as an company that values great engineering is a good thing for BMW. Of course now that they have largely moved to those ridiculous goose neck hinges I have lost some respect for BMW being an engineering company. If you cheap out on something so visible, who knows what lies out of sight.

Funny why they think this way when MB has been successful with their GT line, not to mention Project one, etc.
