SPIED! Will The 2020 Ford Explorer Send The Competition UP THE RIVER?
Although this horse has been beaten to death, it bears repeating. Ford made headlines for deciding to ditch just about all of its sedan-based models in favor of sport-utility vehicles. Given consumer interest, this appears to be a wise decision.
The anchor of Ford's SUV lineup? That would be the Explorer, which has gotten quite long in the tooth. Well, until now.
2020 Ford Explorer
All-new for the 2020 model year, the Explorer is seeing major revisions. From its exterior it may not appear that significant, however, the nip/tuck does make a difference in its appearance. The major changes one will note are on the inside though.
That's where Ford has affixed a massive, optional infotainment display as well as fitted a rather pretty looking digital instrument panel display. The IP looks like something you'd get in something much more high end.
And Agent 001 was on the scene in Portland to take it all in. While we cannot provide you with driving impressions, we do have carte blanche as it relates to sharing photos of the 2020 Ford Explorer.
Check out the pictures below and let us know what you think of the 2020 Explorer.

Good lucking inside and out save for the iPad that looks like it is going to fall over.

It's a cross-over, not an SUV.

Not sure I'd even consider this over the new Highlander or the Telluride. I do find the ST model appealing, but a bit pricey for what it is. I'd rather stretch for a Jeep GC SRT.

Agree, for the price I prefer the Telluride.

Its handsome enough, but the inside looks like it lost quite a bit of packaging efficiency versus the old version. If you check out the Ford.com configurator, it seems like Ford is only marketing it in a 6-seat (i.e. 2nd row captain chairs) version. Wonder if they will sell a 7-seat (2nd row bench) option.
That vertical iPad thing looks terrible though. It is visually too tall for the instrument panel and is completely the wrong proportion. Plus it looks like it about to get snapped off.
Solid 'A-' I'd say.

It has the potential to be a massive stumble given that it is an all-new vehicle wearing 2011 styling.
For me the styling is not attractive at all. It's not ugly, but there is enough wrong about it that I'm not expecting it to go gangbusters.
The new RWD platform could actually reduce packaging efficiency. An FWD platform puts the engine/transaxle mostly ahead of the front centerline while RWD puts the engine/transmission mostly behind the centerline and as a consequence it intrudes on the passenger compartment.
Not feelin' it.

The old platform for the Explorer was the D3/D4 platforms derived from the old Volvo P3 platform that also was the basis for the Ford Taurus - was actually quite a bad platform - not at all space efficient - and that means the new Explorer might actually be an improvement on the old one.
However - the styling is a major letdown. And it will be competing with the New Chevy Blazer - which at least is a styling hit. However - this is a segment that Ford has owned since it was based on the mid-size trucks - and I expect it will at least sell okay

It will NOT be competing with the Chevy Blazer. It competes with the Traverse.
The Edge competes with the Blazer.
I also love how you tell us things that all of us already know. #arrogant

You regularly quote things that some of us know here as well Matt - it is a normal thing. And as far as which Crossover the Bazer Competes with the Explorer - BOTH the Blazer and Traverse are 3 rows - and will compete with the Explorer - as GM continues to split the difference in size to attract more customers.
AS far as the Blazer Styling - it has been well received by the reviewers I have read - AND as far as sales - we only have real numbers from ONE month of partial initial sales to judge by. Chevy is just beginning its nationwide Ads for the vehicle - now in the NY metro area.

The Blazer is a "styling hit"? The sales of the blazer have been terrible.

I think it’s terrific... it’s going to sell extremely well. There are a lot of folks who are still not ready to go over to the Koreans as good as they are... GM should worry but are to arrogant...

This or the Telluride...hmm. I suspect the Telluride will be hard to beat, but lets assume the Exploder is somehow better, you still have to deal with the ugliness of the styling.
The 2011 Explorer was an ugly design--almost Aztek bad up front--and you'd think things would improve. The lights are too small for the grill or the grill is too large for the lights. Then there's the way the grill oddly stretches under the lights making it look like a bad collision repair job.

This is going to be significantly more expensive than the Telluride from what I have read. Yet the Kia has better packaging, warranty, interior and is arguably better looking.

This is NOT going to be "significantly more expensive than the Telluride". Both will be priced within dollars of each other comparably equipped. I need only to look at our inventory of both to see that they are not different in price. The Explorer tops out higher, but the bread and butter is even Steven.

The Telluride shows up and boom they are gone. We have vins and window stickers on Explorer as incoming. We haven't really had people asking about it.

That is what my local dealer said. They cannot keep them is stock. But then I drove the Stinger GT. I think this is my next ride. In sport mode it is the best steering sedan I have driven in some time.

It is the second best looking vehicle in the segment after the telluride. It has the best powertrains and will be more refined due to the longitudinal/rwd platform. The problem is that they priced themselves out of the segment. Ford will be forced to put a lot of cash on these to compete with the rest of the the segment which are all cheaper to build.

I think the old-assed Durango looks better as does the dull Traverse.
