Rumor Mill: Future Generation Of RWD Toyota And Lexus Sedans May Be Mazda Based

The future generation of several Toyota and Lexus cars will allegedly source their rear-drive platform and inline-six engine from Mazda, according to a rumor citing unnamed insiders from Best Car in Japan. The first of these models could arrive as soon as 2022.

Toyota allegedly plans to use the Mazda-sourced rear-drive platform and inline-six engine first on a successor to its Mark X  premium sedan. Lexus intends to implement these parts on a new coupe that would slot between the existing RC and LC.

If Toyota plans on pinning its future from platforms and engines from sub-par brands, it may be throwing away its reputation for quality and reliability. That will be very hard to get back once squandered.

Easy - Toyota won't

The only thing worth borrowing from Mazda is Miata platform and Rotary engine, if they can work out the MPG

This will be mistake #3

#1 Letting Subaru engineer a sports car
#3 Letting BMW design and build the Supra
#3 Letting Mazda design for Lexus

@MD- Or is this Toyota's version of exiting the car mfg business to focus on SUV's?

I think this is a (quiet) plan for Toyota to (outsource) some R&D work through their partnership with Mazda. This is just short of a merger deal similar to Toyota-Subaru deal. Mazda, like Subaru, would benefit from Toyota's global reputation & return consumers.

But this could help Mazda fill-in missing vehicles in their own lineup with the help of Toyota.

Is Toyota eventually going to be the "generic equivalent" of brand names? Like Walgreen brand ibuprofen instead of Advil?

Can someone tell me what Mazda knows about RWD technology? Do they sell RWD vehicles in other parts of the world. RX7 is from the past!!

And everyone knows that the Miata is a "cute" convertible made for fat old men who prefer the company of other men--not that there's anything wrong with that--but the bar of expectation involves fruit flavored martinis rather than chassis dynamics. Like Subaru, Mazda's "prowess" is more hype than fact.

You have a weird hangup with homosexual culture - not that there's anything wrong with that. Just sayin.

@Runningdumbass1 Bitch, please. Actually I don't. Two of my brothers are gay. My father is gay and my adopted son in gay. You just have ZERO sense of humor and are a judgmental bastard. I also changed the culture of our dealerships to be more aware of and sensitive to gay/lesbian clients and co-workers. But since you are such a hate-based person I suspect you'll spin out of control and spew.

I didn't call you a homophobe. You just bring up a lot of gay references in your posts. Mainly tired stereotypes. Odd.

Point of fact #1: You referred to gays and lesbians as "homosexuals" which is a politically incorrect, pejorative term.

Point of fact #2: Spend ANY time around gay men and THEY will send up the stereotypes in humor right and left.

Point of fact #3: You probably don't associate with "those people" and say things like "some of my friends are gay" when you go to your Democrate Hate Speech rallies.

But you remain a hypocrite.

The Miata is a slider at the track. Mazda has ZERO experience producing a mainstream, premium, RWD platform. They have done niche RWD platforms that have never been class leading in chassis dynamics. This is Toyota being stupidly lazy.

Miata is class leading in chassis dynamics. What's better? By most accounts, the 3,6,CX-5 and CX-9 have class-leading chassis' as well.

It so ISN'T! A GTI can dust it EASILY. But then again, you're someone who never goes to the track and drives much less drives a wide variety of cars. I've bitch slapped Miatas in a base, V6 Mustang around the track.

Go ahead and roll your eyes, but the fact remains: you don't go to the track to drive, you don't have experience with how cars actually perform beyond the hype, and 100% of what you say is based on writing of the "press" after a drugs, alcohol, and prostitutes junket.

I've gone to several. My first one was when I was 16 and I was dressed in a really nice suit and could do convincing stubble, so I looked older. After the presentation on a new vehicle, there was a mixer and there were hookers in the room working it. One felt me up and asked if I wanted to do something. I politely refused. Granted, at the time I was doing everything in sight, but something about that was unsettling. It's not that a manufacturer supplies the entertainment, but somehow the "right" people are in the room at the unofficial mixer.

If there is any truth to this rumor it is that Mazda may use a Toyota platform for a future sedan, either a Mazda 6 or more likely a model above it. Toyota has resources and RWD experience Mazda does not. Why would Toyota start from scratch to share with a low volume company, where are the savings there?
