The Number Of States Charging You Extra To Own An EV Are On The Rise

Electric-vehicle owners and car dealers alike received a major shock to the system recently when the Illinois state legislature proposed levying a $1,000 annual registration fee on all EVs. It had previously been an additional $17.50 on top of the standard charge.

The idea was to make up revenue that’s otherwise lost because electric car owners avoid paying the state tax on gasoline. Already Illinois and other states are feeling the pinch at the pump with new cars becoming more fuel-efficient and gas-tax increases not being politically popular. The gas tax is a primary source of funds used to pay for road improvements, and Illinois had not raised its per-gallon rate since 1990.

Predictably, opponents were both vocal and vicious over a nearly 60-fold increase in registration charges that would become a major disincentive to EV sales. They included startup company Rivian, which is about to begin manufacturing the first in a new line of EVs at a former Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Ill.

This proves my point I made earlier. In the USA states are not taxing the right thing. Piling on property tax would not be needed if there were "sin" taxes on gas, tobacco, wine and liquor. State sales tax on goods and service would help immensely. Much better to have 1/4 the property tax some pay now and choosing which sin taxes you pay vs lumping all of it on your residence. But I can see them trying to get something from BEV drivers. However they are paying for the electricity used at home to charge their cars.

What we should be doing is gutting social programs, cutting taxes, and letting people figure it out.

@MD- If the $20T national debt was eliminated first, anything is possible. But for now, a few taxes on stuff that isn't all that good for you in the first place, won't kill anyone. And may even save a few lives in the first place if the cost of smoking finally makes them quit. Just think of the tax revenue if Pot was legal across the USA? Being summer I can already smell it on the after dinner dog walk around my area. A lot of senior exec's are patio puffers apparently.

Trading property taxes for higher sin taxes sounds good in theory but it would hit the poorest segment of the population hardest (less likely to own property and own property of less value) and cannot begin to equal taxes collected based on property. Higher sales taxes hit the lowest income groups the hardest...think about it.

@CC You're a dumbass. You cannot reduce the debt without massive spending cuts. Gutting social programs is where you can have the most financial impact on the debt NOT increasing the already high taxes even higher as you advocate. All that does is cause more spending and more debt.

Kill all welfare to non-citizens.
Make all welfare a one-time, once-in-a-lifetime, short duration (2 years) program with the recipients having to drug test randomly and dividing the dollar amount of their welfare assistance by the minimum wage to determine how many hours of public work they have to do to get the next check.

Actually "SORRRYMATT" - but you are wrong

There are several Countries in Europe(Especially Scandinavia) who have much more expensive social programs than the USA - and as members of the EU - they had to balance their budgets - which they do with high taxes - not Huge Cuts in social welfare programs. And the high taxes extend to all workers - not just high wage earners. the average wage tax in those countries approaches 45% and a top rate in Sweden of 73%.

Studies of the Scandinavian area show "The Nordics ranked highest on the metrics of real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, generosity and freedom from corruption. The Nordic countries place in the top 10 of the World Happiness Report 2018, with Finland and Norway taking the top spots."

I note - for instance - that after a major inheritance - I now pay a lower tax rate than I did before I had all that income. AND THAT is the major problem - the US Tax system is hopelessly slanted towards helping the rich - and providing lots of deductions for the rich that a poorer person cannot even afford the professionals TO find these things.

Gutting the social welfare programs will eliminate what is left of the American Middle class - and would end up hurting the economy by reducing those with disposable income dramatically - for instance would eliminate the ability for most middle class to afford a new car - lost sales would put millions out of work.

I wish it was as simply as TAX the middle class again - as the conservatives like to do - but that is not an answer to lower deficits - which conservatives have promised through "Trickle down" for decades - but doesn't actually work. THAT has already reduced the middle class substantially. ANd we will need a far more comprehensive program to reduce the deficits - not that most money is owned by the top 1%.

@Foncool - Nope. I went to university and graduate school in Canada. We believe that caring for each other serves a greater good and is part of our national identity. We created the idea of peacekeeping and not surprisingly have national single payer healthcare and a tax system to support it. In contrast the US societal/cultural belief seems to be "I've got mine, go get yours".

It does not serve society on the whole to have poor people, sick people, homeless people, uneducated people or unemployed people. Programs that address these ills help everyone. As Tom pointed out these ideas are only seen as odd in the USA but are well understood and practiced in other G20 nations. But as @MD alluded to, you can't keep spending billions or trillions on so many things (wars + the military) and have the ability to lower taxes.

How Are YOU saving the planet?

Recent studies show that the mining of the rare-earth elements and Lithium for EV's actually cause MORE environmental damage to the Planet than an ICE car currently does. Ev's are not more green - they are LESS.

Should be mileage based tied to some mpg figure when you annually register your car. It would not be fair to tax an EV some large amount when perhaps it sat in the garage all year, just as someone would not pay a gas tax if it sat in the garage all year.
