EPA And California Air Resources Board Are Acting Like Third Graders - Refuse To Sit At the Same Table

Capitol Hill was the scene of some high-school drama this week after representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reportedly refused to sit at the same table while discussing fueling regulations with the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.

As petty as this seems, it illustrates the overall situation rather well. White House officials terminated talks with California in February, citing an inability to progress the debate. Meanwhile, CARB has been claiming the Trump administration doesn’t want to hear its case and has instead sought to strip the state of its ability to self regulate in order to pass reforms that would freeze national emissions standards at 2020 levels though 2026.

Thursday’s congressional bickering helped paint a clearer picture of what the communications breakdown looked like.

California is the bully and it needs to be bitch-slapped into submission. Time for a quid pro quo: California bows to the EPA and the US military promises not to invade California's precious sanctuary cities this week. I'm sure we'll hear some ghetto rhymes out of Old Maxine while Nancy Pelosi will stutter and slur through an incoherent statement about something. After November 2020, Trump needs to declare war on California so that those of us who live here can be liberated from the tyranny.

Not sure what this has to do with you. If a state wants STRICTER standards that is up to them. The federal government should only set the baseline.

Currently that is the law, but it allows one state to boss around the other 49. THAT is the issue. That's definitely abridging legal and civil rights of non-Californians.

Automakers are free to make multiple versions, even though it is not very efficient. Or they could cut out high-end models from CA (V8s etc.) and offer hybrid options instead. They already have many models that are only available in CA or a limited number of states.

Honestly, I think all of this fighting is irrelevant because cars will be forced to go this direction by the market and other countries are already putting ban dates on ICE cars. Only smog regulation should be needed. If someone wants to pay $100 every time they fill up a Hummer H2 that gets 10 MPG, that is their choice. Gas will get more expensive, EVs will get less expensive, eventually the market will correct itself.

It has been widely reported and verified that the video of Nancy Pelosi slurring her speech was faked. I am sure it is fodder for his base.
However, video of tRump saying stupid shit all the time is unedited. And his morning hangover tweeting is unedited.
Interesting article in the Economist about tRump's incoherent strategy in the middle east, specifically with Iran.

California's supposed "right" to wag the dog will be challenged on the notion of equal protection under the law.

If California is allowed to dictate one "standard" and the remaining 49 have a law different from California, it follows legally that citizens in California--because they do not have the option to drive a 49-state car--do not have equal protection under the law.

The Democrats argued that state rights trumped federal laws as they fought hard to keep slavery and segregation alive. Legally, this is the same sort of mechanism.

The Democrats and Teslarati will begin the down votes in 3...2...1.

It's easy to forget Republicans were the ones fighting to end slavery and segregation. The one problem with the analogy is the intent. We can all agree slavery was wrong and trying to abolish it was the right thing to do. Minimizing pollution seems to be the good/right thing in this case--and tens of thousands of people do die each year due to pollution. Given what the entire rest of the world is doing, it seems like the EPA is on the wrong side of the argument and is pushing to do the wrong thing pushed by what is in the auto industry and not necessarily the consumer's favor. I'm not a fan of regulation, but think states should have the right to impose stronger safety standards (if you live in a polluted city, this IS a safety concern).

That's not equal protection under the law.

First - Driving a car is not a "RIGHT" - in every state you have to qualify to drive a car on public roads - AND - if you look at those laws - they specify different ages as a minimum - plus lots of other differences - speed limits are obvious.

EPA standards cannot be the same in every state because condition of the AIR is not the same in every state - nor it the same in some areas vs other areas of the states as well. Because of the way the North AMerican coast is made up - concentrates polution in caliornia unlike any other state. WHICH DO YOU MAKE EQUAL - the AIR or the LAWS? - you will not be able to do both.

Thankfully - the current conditions will end - as all things do in the Usa. WE have had bad times before - and we will have more in the future as well. But - we the people have not changed as radically as the politics changed - and it will eventually even out.

You all seem to forget that Obama administration negotiated a 50 state standard which auto manufacturers reasonably wanted.
Trumo's band of revolving incompetents threw that out.
Trump's only way of negotiating is to threaten and insult the other party and then back down.
He has no credibility with the rest of the world.
And his EPA is run by a group of anti-science fools.
California will wait this out.

Automakers do not have the option of not wanting stricter emission legislation because that would be a public relations nightmare. The business case for automakers WORSENS with increased emissions legislation. The Obama Gestapo constrained them and the automakers--having no other option--played along. Coercion is not a virtue.

To be honest, I am thankful that we have a President that does not worry about what foreign governments think of him.

California will wait this out and then in November of 2020 they will say "Oh shit! He's coming after us on every level."

You may think this is a virtue not to care what other countries think, but the US has been a world leader by economic, military AND integrity in supporting democracies and allies. You cannot run it like the company daddy gave you. And by the way he ran that into bankruptcy.
The reckless and impetuous tRump administration has broken multilateral treaties without consulting anyone. Who would trust us now. This spells lack of influence. The void will be filled by others. We have already lost influence in Asia over the abrupt pullout from TPP.

How come conservatives always call either Obama weak and a dictator.
It is this president that is acting as a dictator, ignoring the constitution and rule of law that made this country great.
And then suggest he is open to treason by inviting foreign adversaries to help him win the next election.

So true. The #FOTB drivers mixed with the texting while driving crowd make our roads beyond unsafe. Then mix is how California has redirected taxes collected for road work and plowed it into buying Teslas for illegals and nothing California says can be taken as legitimate.
