Chevrolet On The Verge Of Killing the Camaro For A Second Time - Who Will Reap The Spoils?

Could Chevrolet be on the verge of killing the Camaro again? A new report from Muscle Cars and Trucks alleges that might well happen after 2023, which is when the current sixth-generation ‘Maro is slated to end production. The report cites “multiple sources” at General Motors as saying the next-generation Camaro program is suspended, with no apparent future beyond 2023. Those sources also allegedly say the nameplate will likely get shelved, meaning no more Camaro for the second time in the pony car’s history. We contacted GM to see if there’s any truth to the claim, and received this official statement:

They need to build a Camaro that has amazing styling. When the Camaro went the the Alpha platform the new one look too much like the old one. The restyling of that model for the update was hideous.

The car itself is excellent. The styling is the culprit. The Challenger is ANCIENT but the styling is still amazing and it sells well.

I forgot to mention about the Challenger - which likely has a short life ahead. This model and the others still on that old Mercedes Chassis - the chrysler version - the LX-LD-LA platforms - are already over 15 years old and it is not aging well. WHen YOU add in that this is ONLY built for Chrysler in Canada - which is FCA's highest cost production facility - you have to wonder when they will move the car to another platform to get it out of Canada but also to make the resulting product more suitable for EUrope - where sales are Dismal.

Although it is not necessarily the case - I believe that the Camaro is being perceived as the Horse number three in a three horse performance race.

In addition to failing to really update the styling in the last platform move - there has been no Excitement regarding performance compared to the Hemi Powered Challenger. And I believe that it is that performance - read that Horsepower - that is keeping the Challenger in the mix.

THe ATS and CTS replacements use a version 2 of the Alpha Platform - so a Platform is still available - and right now it is low enough volume as to justify keeping a camaro - to Add to that Volume. But this time - they need to restyle - and they need to up the Performance numbers (Something that is happening anyway with the Corvette.

IF it were me = and of course it depends on how well they sell - I would be looking for a 4 door as well

Indeed because it's the Camaro that makes the ATS/CT4 doable. The CT4 is literally and reskinned ATS. If you look at pictures, the old car screams through loud and clear.

Ford is taking the Mustang to the CD6 platform in the next generation. If only GM were proactive.

Idiots if they do, though nothing (bad) GM does surprises me.

In 2014 the Camaro did 86k units in the USA. Last year in did 50k units. Not sure what volume justifies the business case for a low volume model. Corvette soldiers on with much less volume than that. Time will tell.

Ford was smart to make the Mustang RHD and to target Europe.

@MD If you are going to bother making a Heritage/niche car you better make it sellable to all its fans around the world. Ford did the right thing. GM should follow.

The Mustang is desirable in Australia that no longer has the Falcon. GM has no Commodore, but the Camaro--though available--tacks on a very costly RHD conversion cost. Mary Barra is an absolute idiot. She has no product vision.

Ironic as this sounds, GM/FCA could share platforms easily for a mutual win.

It is also on the ATS platform making total volume for this platform doable.
They need to improve the style and interior to sell more and to fill the void with the Corvette getting more expensive.

This PROVES GM execs are using crack cocaine and heroine. Only drug crazed execs would kill off the Camaro pony car.
Pretty soon we will see the Camaro SUV. GM is PATHETIC.

Camaro is just ugly, you can’t tell the difference in each generation of the car. That’s why they did an emergency refresh of it.

The Camaro is ugly. The interior looks cheap and always has. They should have targeted the 1980-1981 Camaro and made the Z28 a motor and styling update that is affordable and a daily driver.

The Vette is going to be an epic fail too.
