FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: BMW's All-New 1-Series Makes Its Debut And 001 Details It In Pics -- Is It A STUD or DUD?
BMW's hot selling 1-Series was something the US market was yearning for. A back-to-basics, standard BMW; however, when the Bavarians showed off the all-new version, many were a little less-than happy.

That's because its all-new looks are a bit controversial.

This led Agent 001 right to the car when he first started shooting cars at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Now we've got a hold of the MOST detailed shots of the car, from the exterior to the interior, we think you can make an accurate assessment:

Is the all-new 1-Series a STUD or a DUD?

Remember, BMW packaged this car in twol forms: Urban and Sport. Can you spot the differences?

Awkward styling...wait for coupe and convertible to be rebadged as 2 series models.

Lose the headlights and you have a brilliant little car!

I think this new 1-Series is HOT. The question is will BMW import the 5-door hatch to the USA or will they dumb it down with a simple coupe again. I will be first in line if the hatch makes it to America, and yes I'll be checking all the performance options on the option sheet to capture the BMW driving experience.

I have always loved the hatchback sedan design (see Citroen) and the hatchback (88 Honda Civic Si, Peugeot 205, etc.) so I don't think this ugly. But personally I do think the hood is too long so the proportion seems off. Aside from the design aspect, I just have a hard time seeing the American market warming up to a hatchback, period.

As mentioned...the proportions are way off...looks bizarre and not in a good way

The new one series has been receiving very positive reviews in europe, so its oviously a good car, and a big improvment. Im not a huge fan of hatches, but I thin the coupe version of this car will look quite nice.

I actually really like it! I would buy one because I am training for a triathlon and it would help hauling my car and i would put a roof rack on it. I dont have kids, so who cares about ample rear space for people.
I do have a 335i sedan, but I would like a hatch. If they had made a 335i wagon for the states, I would be all over it.
I wish they would bring the cloth interior to the US. They should try it out, but just for the 1 series to help with the price point.

Nose line, space between grille and headlamps, extra large headlamps and grille look disproportionate and ugly. Nothing is working at the front end imo. Rear end looks nice but is a copy of VW polo. DUD

Not bad, will reserve final judgement for after I see it in person... I wish there were this many options for interiors on MINIs and BMWs... tired of Dakota leather and leatherette, let's offer some cool mixed interiors of cloth/leather/contrast-stitching etc.

I hate the new Corporate BMW front-end. It's light years better than the Acura beak, but it looks disproportionate and bug-eyed.

A 318ti by any other name is still a 318ti at what will probably come in at $33k+ with the diesel version matching the A3 at $40k.

This is a Ford Fiesta with a big snoopy nose.

Fail.

The M sport pack looks good. Stud.

Personally, I think it's ugly and I'm a fan of hatchbacks. Looks too plain and the rear lights looks like an afterthought. The interior looks good, though.
