FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: Deja Vu? 001 Gets MORE Real-Life Shots Of The Toyota FT86 II Concept
One of the cars that initially received a lot of attention was Toyota and Subaru's joint project car, the FT86, -- on Subaru's side it's known as the BRZ. But with Toyota we've seen several concepts now, and it's even been shown as a Scion.
So, what exactly is going on here? We don't know. Toyota likely is trying to gauge the show's interest in the specific concepts and is monitoring sentiment. I bet that's what's going to guide the design and final outcome of the FT86 project.
For example, I don't think many took too kindly to Toyota releasing the vehicle as a Scion. That's not because Scion couldn't do it, but because the brand likely would dub the concept down so much since the accounting department would get involved.
Toyota, on the other hand, has the ability to price the car higher in the market and also has the lineage to back up a sports car of this caliber.
Taking all of this into consideration, is THIS FT iteration the most aggressive and what you'd be looking for in a production vehicle?

Rear end is nice and aggressive, IMHO! I can live without some of the Dr. Fu Manchu front end styling though. Not saying it's bad, just needs to be more streamlined, tweaked, if you will, ala Supra! Side profile is great! I see some Aston DB in there! And it would be nice if this thing handles great and matches up performance wise with the GT-R! I can dream, can't I?

Looks really good. Just wonder which version Toyota is going with since they've shown us about 3 or 4 so far. Interested to see what they did with the interior. And of course pricing. If relatively quick and agile and decent interior for low $20K-mid $20K, Toyota has a hit on it's hands. About time they build something that actually has excitement in the brand. The last car that did was the Supra and they stopped production on that cars years ago and was getting too expensive even then that it was no for the masses. Now the masses can have style and afford it!

I can't wait for this come out, if it ever does, crossing my fingers though. I know what I'm using my college grad discount on :)

Very nice, If it performs as good as a 370z I might have to get one. But knowing Toyota, they'll dumb it down, give it about 170hp, and make it a really good looking scionTC replacement.

What kind of engine will it have? And those numbers you psoted aren't anything special.

A 2.0 liter subaru boxer engine, which normally makes 150hp, will be brought up a little due to Toyota intake revisions. I'm guessing 165hp, bd is a little optimistic.

165hp? What is this? 1990? LOL!!! ScionTC replacement. LOL!!!
I was expecting a 370z competitor.

BD is Toyota's injection system really going to boost power output 33%? 10% increase maybe...

A few things, Toyota is trying to maximize the engines fuel economy and lower emissions, not to increase performance. Also, the Celica model you mentioned wasn't a "base" model.

"Sadly though, the price shift reflects larger trends within the FT-86's development, none of which are wildly promising from the perspective of the enthusiasts that this car was allegedly being built for."
...
"[The FT-86's] R&D team is now more focused on minimizing fuel consumption and producing the cleanest engine possible"

"Toyota builds the worlds best handling production vehicles second to none,"
- 100% pure fanboy drivel. And the Matrix out handles the Honda Civic Si? Please put down the Toyota Crackpipe. And what does the Avalon out handle? LOL!! Toyotas are not known for handling and performance. I guess if you're a dumb American you'll believe everything you seen in an advertisement (and throw a little false pride in there). Toyota fans are the worst and also the dumbest.

Like I said earlier: it looks so much faster than it will be. I love the design, but it's worthy of 500hp. With a 2-liter four this is a complete rice rocket straight from the factory. I'd rather have a tC to avoid looking like a complete poseur. I say Toyota should drop the IS-F V8 in it before it's too late.
