The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro might be unveiled at the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 and serve as a pace car, following the legacy of the first-generation Camaro (1967 and 1969), third-generation Camaro Z28 (1982), fourth-generation Camaro Z28 (1993), fifth-generation Camaro SS (2010 and 2011) and fifth-generation Camaro Z28 (2011 and 2014).
An insider close to the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly plant’s operations (where the sixth-generation model will be built), told Autoevolution about the debut of the 2016 Camaro to “look forward to Memorial Day (May 25), give or take a few days.”
The Indy 500-mile race takes place 24 hours before the Memorial Day and considering the muscle car’s significant history with the event, the all-new model can be expected to debut there. A New York Auto Show debut should probably be ruled out, as the golden bowtie wouldn’t want the Camaro to steal any attention from the 2016 Malibu and the 2016 Spark which it wants to sell in large volumes.
Going back to the details of the all-new model, the 2016 Camaro would be a rear-wheel driven vehicle based on the Alpha platform. The sixth-generation model would predictably be lighter than the fifth-generation model. The engine line-up is likely to include naturally aspirated and supercharged V6/V8 engines and a new 2.0-liter I4 LTG turbocharged gasoline engine. Transmission options would initially include 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic, but a 7-speed manual transmission and an 8-speed automatic transmission might be offered along with/replace them in the future.
A right-hand drive version shouldn’t be ruled out of consideration, with the fact that its closest rival – the sixth generation Ford Mustang – is being offered in right-hand drive. The Performance Data Recorder which is available on the Corvette and the Cadillac ATS-V and the Cadillac CTS-V, would also be offered.
