You're looking at the first official images of the engine that will power the soon-to-arrive 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Called the LS9, the 6.2-liter, supercharged, small-block V-8 is trimmed in blue, a possible homage to the Blue Devil moniker that has been thrown about ever since the first details of the super Corvette were first sniffed out.

Output figures still haven't been finalized, but look for the engine to be rated somewhere in the neighborhood of 650 horsepower. Also pictured is the engine's intake-manifold-integrated twin intercooler, and both the supercharger and intercooler units fitted together, at bottom. The engine will be built at GM's Performance Center in Wixom, Michigan.

We'll get to see the engine under the hood of the ZR1 in January at the Detroit Auto Show. Stay tuned for all the latest on the ZR1 and all the Detroit show debuts during the show press days, Jan. 13-15, 2008.
