One of the most important reasons why the New York Auto Show is important is because it's largely weighted towards consumer interests. While most auto shows are like couture fashion shows — where design is really an art — the Big Apple's show is focused on potential high volume products that get a reaction from in-market consumers.

But there's been a slew of products in recent years that debuted and didn't make "the cut."

Take, for example, the Volkswagen Bus that keeps reappearing every couple of years and continues to get cooler with every iteration, but doesn't actually see the light of day. OR, how about that Mazda with the Furai-like facade and sleek two-door styling? Instead we received the CX-5.
