Safety

BMW believes that safety and performance go hand in hand. The 5 Series Touring continues this trend and, with a five star Euro NCAP result anticipated, occupants are provided with the best in both passive and active safety. All 5 Series Tourings feature an exceptionally stiff passenger shell, dual-stage intelligent front airbags, front side airbags and Advanced Head Protection System airbags as standard. To complement this, safety monitoring stems such as Dynamic Stability Control mated to Dynamic Traction Control, Brake Force Display, Dynamic Brake Control and Tyre Puncture Warning System all come as standard.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC)

While others make do with simple traction control systems, BMW offers DSC with DTC – a high performance safety system offering two levels of traction before intervention. DSC reduces drive power and even applies the brakes to individual wheels should a loss of traction be detected. Three functions make up DSC – Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Corner Brake Control (CBC). The former cuts the engine power while ABS slows the car in a controlled manner without locking the wheels. The latter is a system that dictates which wheel requires braking based on the car’s speed, pitch and angle of steering wheel.

The DSC system fitted to the latest 5 Series Touring is enhanced with DTC, which increases the slip threshold before the system cuts in. Selected by the driver by pressing the DSC button once, DTC comes into its own when snow or gravel normally makes driving treacherous. In these situations, a degree of wheelspin is desired at slower speeds to provide the car with momentum and prevent it from getting stuck. The system only works at speeds under 50mph and until lateral grip reaches 0.4g. On breaching this threshold the car’s electronic safety system reverts back to full DSC mode.

Brake Force Display (BFD)

Following new legislation in December, 2003, BMW has now been able to activate its Brake Force Display technology previously incorporated into BMW 3 Series Coupé and Convertible models, the 5 Series Saloon and 6 Series Coupé and Convertible. Under emergency braking or when the ABS cuts in, an additional area of bulbs illuminate in the taillight unit to ensure that drivers following the BMW are aware of the situation ahead and can take action to avoid the incident becoming more serious.

For added retardation when braking, all-new 5 Series Tourings feature vented aluminium callipers acting on 310mm or 324mm front discs and 320mm disc at the rear. On the BMW 545i SE Touring the disc sizes are increased to 348mm front and 345mm rear, with the addition of aluminium disc carriers to save weight and increase their service life.
Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)
DBC adds to the high standard of safety. It recognises an emergency operation of the brakes and consequently applies maximum brake pressure for the shortest stopping distance, regardless of the force applied to the brake pedal by the driver.

Tyre Puncture Warning System (TPWS)

Tyre blowouts were previously predictable but undetectable in advance until BMW’s tyre puncture system was offered. Now sensors in each wheel constantly monitor the rolling circumference of each tyre and when a loss of pressure occurs the rotation speed increases and a warning displayed. With models fitted with 17 or 18-inch wheels, late night, hard shoulder tyre changes are a thing of the past as Run-flat tyres mean the car can travel at up to 50mph for 90 miles on deflated tyres. Despite a loss of pressure extremely stiff side walls and the shape of the bead hold the tyre on the rim.

Intelligent Airbags

The 5 Series Touring features six airbags as standard; driver and passenger dual stage airbags in the front; driver and passenger side airbags; and head airbags. Intelligent airbags in the front work by limiting the amount they inflate in the event of an impact to counter the force of the crash, inflating to one of two settings dependent on the severity of the accident.

The Advanced Head Protection System airbags feature an inflatable tube with integrated curtain airbags that drop down each side to guard against those inside being cut by flying glass or from objects entering the car. These head airbags also stay inflated for longer to continue to protect occupants in the event of the car rolling over.

As the airbags are linked by the Advanced Safety Electronics system, with its sensors located around the car, no airbag will trigger unless the computer determines it will provide a safety benefit to the occupants. The airbag network works in conjunction with three point inertia reel seatbelts for all five seats. In the event of an accident it also actuates automatic fuel supply cut-off, the disconnection of the battery’s positive terminal and the activation of the hazard warning and interior lights. Front seats also feature belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners that fire to restrain the seat occupants and pull them back into the seat. ISOFIX child seat attachments are also standard with locating points being two positions between the seat back rest and squab. Active headrests, which move closer to your head to prevent whiplash in the event of a rear impact, are another safety feature that comes as part of BMW’s comfort seat option.

BMW Assist

Despite this plethora of active and passive safety equipment, accidents are a reality of motoring and BMW Assist is designed to help when an incident occurs. Available on cars fitted with an in-car telephone and Professional navigation capability, BMW Assist comes into its own as soon as the system detects that one or more airbags have been activated. An emergency signal is sent out to a service centre manned 24 hours a day who then call the driver to assess the situation. If there is no response, the possibility of injuries means the emergency services are called by the service centre. Alternatively, a driver can activate BMW Assist manually should they be involved in or see another accident that warrants an emergency response.

Technology

Aside from the benefits of systems such as Dynamic Drive and Active Steering, BMW has developed a number of advanced technical innovations for the 5 Series Touring to enhance the driving experience.
Head-up Display (HUD – available autumn 2004)
Head-up Display allows 5 Series Touring drivers to keep their eyes fixed firmly on the road and still view the most important driver information. A Thin Film Transistor screen and a four-mirror projector set in the top of the dashboard work together to beam an 18 x 9 centimetres square image onto the windscreen directly in the driver’s view.
Essential information such as speed, navigation instructions, check control messages and cruise control settings can be selected or de-selected by iDrive. The desired information then appears at eye level, but does not detract from the view ahead of the driver. This offers a number of safety benefits.

Research shows a driver needs about two seconds to digest and process information presented by the instrument binnacle, but this process is halved when Head-up Display is used. Consider that a car travelling at 50mph covers more than 22 metres a second, it is obvious many emergency situations can be avoided. Further tests have also shown driver distraction rates from the road ahead are dramatically reduced by 90 per cent when using the system. Fatigue levels in drivers using the HUD system are also reduced on longer journeys.
BMW is the first European manufacturer to offer a Head-up Display system on a production car and, while already available in left-hand-drive markets, the technology will be available in the UK this autumn.

Panoramic Roof

As with the BMW X3 and X5, the 5 Series Touring can also be specified with an optional large panoramic sunroof. With a surface area of 0.68 metres, the largest ever sunroof fitted to a 5 Series splits in two when raised to allow for dual ventilation in the front and the rear. However, should an almost convertible feel be desired then the full-length glass roof can slide back inside the rear roof lining.

The glass panels themselves are made of grey sundim glass that absorbs UV light. This Climate Comfort glass can also be specified to fit the whole of the cabin. By reflecting infra-red radiation, the special glazing keeps the inside temperature of the 5 Series Touring approximately 5 degrees lower than conventional glazing in similar climates.

Active Cruise Control (ACC)

Aimed at making driving more relaxing on busy, but flowing open roads, Active Cruise Control makes use of a radar mounted below the car’s grille. By scanning the road 120 metres ahead the driver can select the speed and allow the system to manage progress. If another vehicle pulls out into the path of the car ACC automatically reduces speed until the vehicle in front and the BMW are travelling at the same pace. If, at anytime, the car cannot decelerate fast enough by itself a visual and an audible warning alert the driver to the emergency situation encouraging them to take evasive action. Naturally, as safety is paramount the driver will always be able to override ACC by accelerating or braking at any stage of the system’s 20 to 112mph operating range.

Adaptive Headlights

With the risk of a severe accident increasing when day turns to night, Adaptive Headlights are another major safety feature. Two electric motors swivel the bi-xenon headlight modules by up to 15 degrees depending on the input of the steering wheel. The result illuminates the hitherto unlit part of a bend that isn’t covered by a conventional car’s headlights when turning. Taking a left-hand corner, for example, the headlight on the left will turn by 15 degrees while the right-hand one swivels eight degrees. The effect of this is to create a headlight footprint 90 per cent greater than that of conventional lamps when cornering because both sides of the road and what is directly ahead remain well lit.

Park Distance Control (PDC)

With the help of PDC a driver can now glide into tight parking spaces unabated. PDC uses ultrasound sensors mated to an audible and graphic display warning system for the driver to ensure easy parking. The bumper-mounted sensors warn the driver of any obstacles up to 1.5 metres to the front and 2.0 metres to the rear from the car.

Satellite Navigation

Ideally used in conjunction with the optional Head-up Display, BMW’s two advanced satellite navigation systems represent the pinnacle in guidance systems. Business navigation offers the user a simple interface via the iDrive controller and dashboard-mounted display screen.
Should the buyer of a BMW 5 Series Touring want to upgrade from Business navigation, the state-of-the-art Professional navigation can be chosen. Offering the same ease-of-use, this system has a 22.4 centimetre colour display, which shows a map of the area and permits the driver to enter a destination vocally courtesy of Extended Voice Control. Further options for planning a route to sights, golf courses or restaurants also feature.
First shown on the 6 Series Coupé and Convertible, Professional navigation now offers a third dimension when it comes to map viewing. Called a perspective view, the driver can select to have the route guidance map showing in three-dimensional form with major landmarks standing out from the map.

Key Memory

Key Memory is a valuable standard feature on all BMW cars and allows individual keys to remember who was using it last and alter a number of features on the car for added comfort and convenience accordingly. On unlocking the vehicle the seat position, mirror angle, steering wheel, automatic air-conditioning and Head-up Display data (if fitted) all alter to that driver’s default setting. Thus, the BMW can be tailor-made for up to four users.

BMW Online and Assist

Already previewed on the 7 Series, 6 Series and 5 Series Saloon, BMW Online is available on the 5 Series Touring in conjunction with the Professional navigation system and in-car telephone. Online provides the owners with a wealth of information from availability of nearby parking spaces to the location of hotels and restaurants. An Inquiry Service also allows the user to access telephone directories and yellow pages, news and weather bulletins, and e-mails.
BMW Assist (already outlined in the safety section) takes this to the next level. Assist features an Inquiry Service Plus option that let’s you talk to a specialist at the BMW Assist Service Centre as well as an automated Breakdown Service, which transmits data and current location of the car to a mobile unit.
