Diesels have a quirky personality, marvelous amounts of power and a grumbly voice that's more assurance than annoyance.
But just try to find one that you can afford. Volkswagen is out of the U.S. diesel market this year, save for its $60,000 Touareg diesel SUV and some leftover '06 sedans. Chrysler discontinued the Jeep Liberty diesel last May.
